Which Spark Plugs???

After looking through various books and tune up information I can't decide whether my 2000 model GC8 has to take a platinum plug or whether it will take a conventional? I can get a set of BKR6E-11's for about $20 instead of $100 for a set of platinums..........

Concept91 13-03-2006 01:20 PM

Atomic's are good save fuel good proformance

BALISTC 13-03-2006 01:28 PM

Spark plugs do NOT save fuel. They only save fuel if the old ones are completely fucked, and in that case, any NEW spark plugs will help to restore the good fuel economy.

I recommend a set of NGK PFR-6B, or if your running lots of boost, NGK PFR-7B. They arent cheap, but nothing good ever is.

EVOCLUB 4 13-03-2006 01:29 PM

Never heard of the Atomic ones, you got any more info???

Josh 13-03-2006 01:33 PM

Scooter,

You own a performance car, don't skimp on shit parts such as spark plugs. Good plugs are hardly expensive.

mr_psi 13-03-2006 01:39 PM

thats very tru, it is well worth spending 100 dollars on plugs then 5k on a build

EVOCLUB 4 13-03-2006 03:02 PM

Platinum spark plugs aren't any better than standard plugs. They are just long life. 100,000kms instead of 40,000kms.

BALISTC 13-03-2006 03:26 PM

The NGK PFRs arent platinum anyway, they are iridium.

On a performance car, spark plugs should be changed more often, even the "long life" plugs. I aim to do my plugs every 25k km.

EVOCLUB 4 13-03-2006 07:50 PM

Hey Ballistic, i'm running 16psi, would this justify running a cooler plug?

P.S. just seen you car in a magazine, sweet dude.... :)

WhiteRX 13-03-2006 08:04 PM

I always run colder pulgs in any engine that is subject to any sort of hard driving, including my own, as the engine will usually get hot enough for the plug to get to it's self cleaning temp, whyle also reducing the chance of expensive engine damage due to the plug begining to glow red and pre ignite the air/fuel.

Iridium/platinum plugs are good if you dont want to change them every 10,000k as Balistic said, although i didnt notice much of a difference in performance or fuel economy between standard NGK plugs and Iridium ones that i had fitted, but i change my plugs every 10K anyway.

You do get what you pay for though and if you skimp on any engine part, then expect problems.

Regards,

Tom

Cheers :D :D

16 psi isnt enough to justify a colder plug. If you go colder, the car CAN become harder to start in some cases.

PFR-6Bs should be just fine, but just make sure the plug gaps are closed down a tiny bit for the slight increase in boost, as running too far a gap with higher boost can see the spark blowing out and the car misfiring.

EVOCLUB 4 14-03-2006 04:48 PM

What is the gap on the PFR-6Bs? Is it 11? and if so what gap do you recommend? 9? 10?

P.S. While we're on the subject, what HT leads do you guys recommend?
My car is just a little hessitant at the moment and want to do plugs and leads at the same time. I've just run some upper engine cleaner through it but it's no better.

Cheers

Hmm, not sure how true this is, but when I replaced my plugs with iridiums, I was told (by NGK) that you should never gap iridium plugs, they can remove and crack the material on the tip.

As for leads, I went down this road and trust me, the middle of the range type leads (top gun etc) aren't what they are cracked up to be. Measured some leads that were the same length and the resistance in all of them were VASTLY different. I went with OEM leads at the end, they aren't cheap but they measured almost perfectly. Also plenty of high powered (and high profile) cars on this forum that make a heck of a lot more hp then I do still use them, so it can't be all bad...
Never heard of the Atomic ones, you got any more info???
well they are gold and have like a protecting clover shape bottom. i had mine put in for 100 bux at M.A.D enhansments. they made to last to 100 000kms. just need to clean them now and again. i get abt 480-500kms out of a full tank.

well my friend at MAD put the iridiums and the atomic to the test and to see how they both spark.
iridiums : fast and sharp little sparks sound like "tik tik tik tik"
atomic: bits slower then the iridiums but more power and loud i'm guessing would be more effective sounds like back fire from car. "pow pow pow"

thats abt all i know.

Diggin up an old thread...

Im new to the whole boxer concept and need to replace plugs and cables, any easy way of going about it? special tools?? or do i just simply need 4 hours and rip half the engine apart to get to them?

BALISTC 10-08-2007 03:06 PM

Just need a spark plug socket and a ratchet with one of those knuckle adaptors in between, so the ratchet can clear the chassis rails.

Anything in the way is quick and easy to remove anyway, should be able to do the whole spark plug change within 30 mins.

cheers mate, are NGK PFR-6B that you've suggested irridium plugs?

BALISTC 10-08-2007 03:18 PM

Yep

Luigi 10-08-2007 04:30 PM

Cant go past the NGK Laser Irridium Spark Plugs

RichX 10-08-2007 05:35 PM

I'm running NGK Iridiums .. All good ..

Mister Two 10-08-2007 05:57 PM

I prefer Platinums. Iridiums did nothing for me when I had a misfire problem with high boost. But the platinums fixed it right up. Still running them after 15,000km and still runs perfect.

Adam_87 12-08-2007 09:14 PM

has anyone tryed these plugs?

Digging up this thread.

Where is everyone buying their plugs from ?

Looking for NGK PFR-8B's

Coventrys ?
Auto One ?

JMAX 20-08-2007 11:48 AM

You'll find no one will stock the 8's let alone 7's. Just get them to order them in for you.

WRXTASY 23-08-2007 07:09 PM

Sorted on the NGK PFR8B-9.

.9mm gapping, going to reduce to .7

$27 each at Coventry's Morley.

Elrico 26-02-2008 12:06 PM

Diiiiiiig Diiiiig Diiiiiiig the old threads. Umm apon WOT i noticed recently my car is slightly miss firing. I want to change the Plugs on it to see if this makes any difference but am unsure excatly how hard this will be. And do most Autoshops stock the NGK? Also, like Mr2 commented on a while ago, he had problems like myself but iridium did nothing to help, would i be safer going platinums?

RichX 26-02-2008 12:52 PM

I'm running Iridiums at the moment .. They have been faultless for me ..
