Pod Filter on a MY09 WRX

2 Attachment(s)
Hey guys,

I went to look at a MY09 Subaru for a mate today. It had an aftermarket 'cosworth' intake pipe and a pod filter on it. Looked pretty tidy etc. Just wondering, is there any issues with AFM's in these models, or ECU issues with having a pod on. Does it require a re-tune normally, or will the ECU learn to live with the pod? Or does it make fugger all difference in the scheme of things, and it's really just a bit of wank and a waste of money?

I have attached photo's.

Thanks
Kym

or not?

Re-tune will be required with this mod. Some designs are better than others I believe but generally the stock box and after market panel filter is the way to go unless you are going to upgrade the cooler and turbo.

With the different piping and filter retune would be needed. The voltage vs. airflow scaling would be wrong for sure. Lean running + 255 = pop.

I would say stick with the aixbox with a good panel filter and do the resonectomy mod, induction/bov noise may not be as loud compared to a pod.

Good excuse for your mate to get a butler TBE + tune :D

Otherwise, back to stock air-box + drop-in filter

I would just chuck it in there TBH, I put a full TBE and PW TMIC and drove it around for 3 months before i got time to drop it off for a tune and turbo....

For all the haters out there, just for the record, f@#k all happened and the engine is still living!

OMG no, it can't be true can it? but a Subaru engine is the most critical thing on earth la la la....

Edit: forgot to mention that i also put EL headers on and a cossi filter.....

I for one was not implying that you would blow up your engine by running a a CAI and a stock subaru tune, but If you want to gain hp by just installing a CAI by itself then don't bother.

Spend your first few hundred dollars of mod $ on a upgraded rear sway bar I say.

^ nah Dave, it wasn't a stab but lets face it some people do think the world will end if it's not tuned to within an inch of it's life!

Don't get me wrong you will get bugger all gains from not tuning but it also will not fail as often as some people make out!

summary says cai pod filter alone = wank ricer effect

main reason why I ask is I was wondering if the car did infact have a Verso on it... or if it's just had it whacked on and no tune done... and if so, is that going to damage anything.

Looks like it's not, and probably not money well spent...

teejay 22-06-2011 09:59 PM

Are the late models in fact so pathetic that a pod will kill a donk?

Scaremongering at it's best...

Provided the diameter of the pipe is the same as stock, I don't see how it would be any different and require a retune?
Admittedly, you're not going to get much out of the mod, but I for one enjoy the vacuum cleaner-like intake noise so I wouldn't have a problem with fitting one, even with stock turbo etc! ;)

Kym, no this is not a verso v ecutek spiel but i had a verso on my betty (still do as i have done nothing to it lately) and i would highly recomend not getting one on our cars, it seems that the ecutek is better with the e-throttle and the verso will be/seem laggy (or thats what we found!)

but the verso did make good power!

mitchwnz 23-06-2011 08:38 AM

^^ Yup... I have been told by several different mechanics not to bother with the pod filter as the stock/factory unit is sufficient. Like you mentioned above it has absolutely no effect in terms of Horse Power... it does look cool though haha.

johnvk7 23-06-2011 08:47 AM

I found a difference on my car pod with enclosure vs factory airbox with STI group N panel. Seemed slower to build boost with factory. Seat of the pants anyway. So it does have some effect.

American Dave 23-06-2011 09:38 AM

one other net effect is the pod makes tuning more difficult I believe
