Default Using the cruise control wires for MoTeC shift light module in steering hub

Before anyone says this is a crack pot idea, save it only

I am wanting for awhile to install my MoTeC shift light into my steering wheel similar to the F430 scuderia. And now i have found someone that is able to wrap my wheel in alcantra so the plan is back in motion..

Now speaking to the main man dougie he says that the only way this will work is to use the coil setup used for indicators, cruise control etc, anthing that is rotating on the wheel..

So the questions begs:

1) Has anyone opened this coil setup apart? Is it easy to access those wires?

2) Can the MoTeC wires be spliced into it and secondly can they then be connected to the CAN cable??

3) Is there another way that this can be done? i am going to chase the wires into the rear of the steering wheel then to the middle where it will go through the hub..

comments please..

Im hoping to have a similar setup with the carbon encasing the shift light and top portion of the wheel, then alcantra wrapped around the rest..

Would cutting into the wheel loose structural integrity at all??

Pull your wheel off and have a look at the mechanism for getting the horn to work.

Then same same.

If I'm reading right, you want to use the existing cruise control harness as the wiring for the SLM? So long as the wire gauge is correct, can't see an issue. It's just power and a signal wire iirc.

yeh thats the plan Jonno...

Im just unsure if the CAN line has some special wire... I know that it will be have to be joined at two places firstly into the the beggining of the cruise control wire then secondly where it goes back into the main loom..

The cruise control wire will then have to be finished off so it doesnt interfer with anything...

If you dont mind losing cruise control, it would be easy. just cut and join the wires on the column side, then connect the shift light to the corresponding wires on the wheel side behind the horn pad.
I wouldn't recommend opening the roll connector, or clock spring as it is sometimes known.
On WRC cars, they just have one of those springy coiled phone cables loosely wrapped around the steering column. Thats another option.

hahah its got to look good in addition to working..

You wouldnt happen to have a wire pin out for the cruise control handy??

I would do as you say leave the mechanism alone and join from either side..

What year model is yours? I can sort you a wiring diagram, or at least give you colours and connector pin outs before the end of the day.
If you do all your soldering or connecting behind the horn/airbag, (theres enough room) then just run a neat harness out of the hole where the C/C lever was, neat as
Stuff on the column side would be under the column covers.

04 STI is the model of my car.. If you can sort something much appreciated..

Id rather have nothing coming out that is free moving, if the splice into the cruise control is an easy enough proposition to do..

Dave i will look at what aspects i can do, but mainly im the design and thoughts guy... hahahah

I will have a look how to mount the shift light but i will a removable backing so that there is access to the shift light if it decides to fail and enough wire to wire in another, for the just in case..

The carbon work will be done by John at fastacraft..

the alcantra will be done by charisma..

Soldering i may call on Macey
