timing issue - retune
please direct me to another thread if there is one, but i couldnt find what i was looking for.
my05 sti - exhaust, gay bov and verso tune 262atw. but i believe that was all done some time ago. the car has now done over 150,000. is there a set time/number of kms before a re tune is recommended? it has always run rich in the four months ive had it, a good tank of fuel is 300km+. but about a week ago, a car savy chick reckoned it was sounding a tad off. me being me was thought nothing really of it. then two nights ago it was idling high. thought maybe just because it was cold, didn't drive it long enough for it to properly warm up. then yesterday sitting at the lights on the way to pick kids up from tafe, it starts doing a bit of 'rotational idle' (900-3500-900-3500rpm...over and over again) but as soon as i tapped the accelerator (green light) it was fine again. and it didn't do it for a few more lights, but then rolling down a street, clutch in, and it starts doing it rolling along? not as aggressive this time, 900ish to about 2600rpm, turn into my street and sit on the driveway, to see if it will do it again, and its perfectly normal? anyway driving to uni today it was fine. on way back it started doing it again, then at last set of lights, it starts running really rough, missing, and engine light comes on. and i tap the accelerator and its gone again, but engine light stays on. so drive home super carefully, and sitting on the driveway it does it again, run rough making the whole car shake like it has mad cams, so try hold revs at about 3k, but there not very steady and its miss firing, and then all of a sudden its back normal again ? i know there is a problem, but the lack of consistency is annoying, ill show someone and it wont do it haha. ive been driving it around pretty timidly past few days (heavy rain/traffic recently, and not very far) thinking timing? in need of a retune, maybe shitty fuel or dodgy afm. im not really sure, any opinions, previous experiences, solutions appreciated. cheers robert. Edit: shitty idling, loss of power & response and missing were caused by dirty throttle body solenoid. Thankyou Steve at maximum motorsport. :) Edit: subaru wangara also had a look at it haha |
Doubt its the tune, they don't just go "out of tune". May be fuel if you've filled up recently. Your Matty's mate aye. Bring it in to Wangara and we can plug the comp in and check the code.

AFM maybe? However I have been told that it is rare for them to go on the GBD models. Saying that my mate has a GDA and he has been through 3 of them.
I had an issue similar to yours, but my rpm was dipping down and making the car shake when coming to idle or whilst sitting at idle at traffic lights etc. My car would also not start sometimes, which I thought was a separate issue. I was 90% convinced it was the Brant system causing these issues. I was also throwing a CEL which would clear after 5 starts of the car. I have a ecudatascan and tried to pull the code with the CEL on, but only after I had restarted the car after the initial light came on. Say, the second start after the 5 to clear the code, if that makes sense. No codes found it kept telling me. I kept looking at the dash CEL scratching my head. I managed to get the code pulled at Evolution R, whilst it was on the dyno. Turned out it was a dodgy cam angle sensor. Not sure why the code cleared after the first re start, but I don’t really care as I have now found my problem. Just need to get the code read on yours and go from there I guess. |
air leak?
a car savy chick
Is she hot? |
Ps, its more likely to be an issue with your air flow meter, air temp, oxygen sensor etc than the tune magically changing. Or a split inlet / intercooler / etc hose.

whys it matter that shes a girl? she was right about it being off. |

Dirty throttle body solenoid was causing it, fixed now. Thankyou Steve at maximum :D
haha you guys are so disrespectful, she probably knows more about cars than you three put together. |
she was right
Huh? This is never the case. EVER! |
Yeah she thought the timing was out.......
In reality her diagnosis was. P.s Respect is earned & not a given. |
Maybe italics was required. I was being a chauvinist.
But yes, in this case her hunch coincidently ended up being in line with the diagnosis... |
Glad you found your issue bud. Just needed a clean? Or did you replace it?
|
Hmmm, pretty sure I diagnosed this for free yesterday, under the premise we got to fix it.

Miss firing problem
Hi Guys
I have a similar issue with my MY99. I Change IACV and cleaned AFM. Idle was fixed by the change in IACV but is still missing on normal driving. Will this also be the throttle body solenoid or is that the same as IACV. Any other ideas. Plugs are 40000kms old Dont know if leads have been replaced. Car dosent miss when you put your foot down, just highway driving |
That sounds more like a faulty sensor then. Maybe AFM.
|
Or the 02 sensor.
|
Hi Guys
Swapped the AFM for a good one It stopped the miss firing but made the idle all stuffed up. Running rich Idle was either to high or to low and would stall. Going to change Oxegen sensor to see if that fixes it then its off to the tune shop. Does anyone have a working Oxegen sensor for sale MY99 Any suggestions |
How many threads are you gonna post in? What ECU does your car have? is it factory?
|
You could give you IACV a clean to. Sits on your throttle body. Do a search for cleaning DIY's.
