Default Burping Cooling System.. Issues?

Finally put in the new radiator today, I then filled with 7 litres of genuine subaru coolant. I turned the heater on, left the radiator cap off to burp the system. But there was not much air / bubbles coming out at all even after the fans had kicked in. There was however a fair bit of steam coming out, also the temp gauge was sitting on the second line, closer to hot, whereas it used to sit only on the first line.

I am thinking possible not enough coolant, because the aftermarket radiator is bigger than the standard radiator..

Any ideas??

There is no tap to speak of in the internal heater system, the knob on the dash works a flap on the heater box. I believe you have an air lock in the system and you need to clear it and add more coolant. These days the mechanics have a funnel that attaches to the radiator cap, this is fitted while the car is running and allows coolant to enter the system as it is required.

^^ yep that funnel works good

if i was you rhys just let the car warm up till the fans come on and turn off again, while keeping an eye on the coolant level

if your radiator is aftermarket you will need more coolant

I've found squeezing the top hose quickly for a minute or so then taking the cap off and filling to the top again - a half a dozen times seems to work, you'll find the hose becomes very hard once pressure is up & air is out

You have an air lock, did the fans go off? Or just stay on.

I jacked up the front of the car this morning, took the rad cap off, turned on the engine, was squeezing the top rad hose, as the temp warmed up to the first line the fans kicked in, I was still squeezing and saw no bubbles, the temp kept rising and the fans stayed on. As the temp rose to the second line, its stayed there, but steam started coming from the radiator, i was still squeezing but still saw no bubbles and the fans where still on. I then realized i was getting nowhere so i turned off the car.

I also had the heater on the whole time, and noticed it was still blowing out cold, and the top rad hose, did not stiffen up at all.

You need to get your hand on one of these, or take it to a mechanic, just to be safe!!
