Stock gc8 getting a turbo massage
Hey all,
I've got a standard unopened GC8 (MY99) ej20, the standard turbo is bowing out due to oil seal making a hasty and unwanted departure. See, I'm one of THOSE drivers that likes to keep my left hand free and only has 2 pedals in my footwell, I have been reading a lot on turbos that will go onto my setup and the winner by TKO will be the VF28 I'm picking up in 2 days. I have been informed that anything more than 150kw at the wheels will require the opening of the wallet to do the opening of the engine and replace all sorts of things, whereas another (respected) tuner tells me 220kw atw will be easy without opening the engine. Can ANYONE shed any light on this subject and advise on an ECU that will handle the setup nicely? Many thanks :D |
150kw would be rather doable.
220kw will need injectors, ecu, fuel pump, and more. |

Does anyone search these days?
Plenty of GC8's rolling around with 250-300hp with mod lists on here. (185 - 223kW) Block strengthening at 150kW? LOL go see someone who knows what they are doing. ECU as stated every day this week... PowerFC, Vipec, Autronic, Motec or whatever your tuner uses and gets good results out of. No point rocking up with a Haltech if your tuner has never used one before imo. |
Mmmm, the magic 300whp. Engine will take it, but supporting mods required
|
I have a MY98 and I am also one of 'THOSE' drivers lol. I have an ej22 with a vf23, process west tmic, upgraded fuel pump, bigger injectors, tbe, and tuned with power fc...
And with the auto, I'm only getting 165kw atw. Auto's suck on a dyno. |
Ok, to clarify a little further, there is a Walbro 550hp fuel pump in the tank right now, sard fuel reg ready to go in, HDI front mount going on as well as a TCP 3" exhaust, sourcing some STI injectors and by the looks of thing the Vipec is going to get the job of residing in my passenger footwell.
Do I necessarily have to break open the engine to attain the figures I'm looking for? |
As said before.
No. (200+kW start budegeting for a gearbox upgrade at some point) |
^^ what he said
|
anything over 70hp on ej20 requires major block upgrades...this includes welding/soldering of piston sleeves onto the engine block
