99GT Foz - Gearbox options

Hey folks,

I know this is P-WRX, but being as most of you here are members at OzFoz I thought i might as well ask here 1st...

I'm on the lookout for a possible replacement manual gearbox for the 99 Forester GT, as i think mine might be on its way out.. what are my realistic options? i'm trying to weight up whether i just strip and repair the one i have already, or if there are box's that i can swap out from other models/MY's that are relatively cheap.

I'd consider a 6sp conversion if its worthwhile, but an idea of the costs involved would be great.

Thanks :)

i paid 2k for my low k version 4 sti dccd 4.444 box when i lunched my stocker, basically any 4.444 box will be a bolt in affair with no change of rear diff required  the later model xt boxes also bolt in but i'm not sure when the change was regarding push/pull clutches

6k speed = budget 5-7k (best case/worst case)

6000 speed! Must have epic gearing!

Same gearbox as used in the EVO in 2 Fast 2 Furious!

^^^ that would be your cheapest 'get of of jail' card

Thats what i'm trying to work out.. do i want a cheap-fix or do i want something that will last until the motor dies and a drop a new engine in.

As mentioned it will depend on your rear diff as to what box to get...

Or if you want to spend some more and upgrade the rear diff too.

$1-2k to fix a 5 speed.
$1-2k to buy a 2nd hand box and smash it in.
$5-7k to fit a 6 speed. Upper end if you want DCCD or 06/07 spec.

Maybe need to factor $500 for a rear diff if the ratios do not suit.

Edit: What is actually wrong with your current gearbox? Personally I'd fill it with smurf snot and drive it till it breaks, unless you need reliability for track or something.

Hell no, no track use :-)

It's just my daily from Scarbs to Wangara and back every day. Driving to work this morning I missed a gear and it was making some funny noises after, so just got me thinking about what i need to budget for if I have lunched it.

I got the car super cheap, so don't mind splashing a little on a transplant box if its necessary.
