Default Head gasket 02sti ej207 engine with version 6 sti heads

Ok guys,

quick question. i have purchased a new ej207 block off subaru, for my 1999 version 6 sti, now i know it has different pistons to my version 6 ones, which appear to have a different volume, what head gasket do i use.

Subaru have told me that i will need to still use the stock thin head gasket since my standard engine is a ej207, but the pistons are different and look to have less volume, which would increase my compression ratio.

They also said that there is a thicker option, which is what is done when wrx heads are put onto a sti block but that is not required with my engine.

Now im not asking this from a performance side of things, but more a keeping the engine running close to how it was before. so to those who have done it, what gaskets did you use, were they the thin sti ones, or the thicker wrx ones??

Cheers
Tom

what was wrong with your bottom end?

surely you just use standard gaskets...wouldnt have thought the volume could be that different to actually make any difference to how it runs.

Have a cheap set of Head Gaskets here if they suit your application.

Let me know.

Yeah mate, they are the thick gaskets, the thin ones are the sti ones, though im not sure how different they are.

Tim, number 3 big end wore out this time, so currently crank is getting checked again. it appears that they machined them all over the place, like there is a difference of 0.030mm between some of the big ends, so hopefully they will re-machine it and give me a free set of bearings, then we will see what i do with the original block.

Tom, you are right about different shapes giving different volume, I recall some discussion about this on NASIOC. The difference is small tho' The tune should be able to accommodate. Now is the time to go MoTec.
