Engine Flush - Good or bad
Hi,
Anyone here use a good quality engine flush like Amsoil or Liqui Moly before oil change say every 50,000 or 100,000 kms in their subaru? Is this a good practice ? |
yes, we do them on almost every service, regardless of k's
|
i'd recommend subaru upper engine cleaner before dropping the oil too
|
i have got wynn's engine flush but yet to use it. will look into it when i do my major 200k service. normally do a service every 5k as norm, so i guess engine flushing every 5k would be a bit over kill?
|
Hi all, Sorry I don't mean the Subaru upper engine cleaner. I actually mean the engine oil flush where you pour this stuff into your sump & let car idle for 20 min & then replace oil & filter.
|
Not necessary unless you've gone way past the scheduled service interval or you have a RS Liberty EJ20G with tappet noise.
|
fill the sump with diesel/kero, run for 2 minutes, drop.
done. |
fill the sump with diesel/kero, run for 2 minutes, drop.
done.
Showing my ignorance but wouldn't that be damaging or the potential of damaging the engine Tuna? |
light oils, not suggesting the car be taken for a drive.
|
So you just add like half a litre to your sump of prewarmed oil? Then run for 2 mins?
|
What Tuna said, I did it to very my rattly WRX 6yrs ago then it sat for 4yrs untouched but now after 2yrs of use it still runs perfect, we just drained the old oil, put 5L of diesel in it then let it run for about 10min until it was up to temp giving it a very light rev every few min, the amount of gunk that came out was amazing.
|
Learn something every day - I always thought that was a old man's tale.
|
Just diesel? Stuff. Didnt think diesel had lubricating properties to make it safe to run for 10mins!

What stuff do you use to flush it through. Is it Subaru flush or something else?? |
Hmmm. Might try the diesel trick next service. Also make sure if you guys do put a flush/ diesel through it, to change your oil filter, and not do what some people I've seen do and just drop and refill the oil.. -_-
|
Diesel works for sure. Gets rid of the rattly rs heads issue for a few months.
|
can the same be done to the gearbox?
might consider it for both engine and gearbox for when i do the major at 200k |

We use Fortron enigne flush. I don't know where you can buy it from, we buy bulk |
Diesel is just a thin oil with detergents added, I'd probably use petrol in the box if I wanted to get rid of all traces of old oil if I was changing from/to something like Redline which doesn't mix well, just fill it up and lift off the ground and spin the box a few times to dilute what is in there but otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Is Fortron good? I get other stuff off them & the rep comes down next week...might snag some. |

Definitely don't start the engine with only petrol in the gearbox, you'll destroy the bearings in no time. Even spinning a roller bearing with no oil in it by hand can damage it. |

You work for Subaru dont you, or used to?? So there is no problems running this stuff through in regards to seals, gaskets etc. |
