Gear box problems continue - Any help appreciated

Ok Guys,

So the wrex went into the local garage this morning for a gearbox change to see if this combatted the gear problems that I have been having. The gears are hard to select but dont grind when going into gear - apart from reverse ever so slightly but only occasionally.

It would appear that the gearbox oil change hasnt worked. the garage think that its the clutch pressure plate, the clutch seems fine it doesnt slip when put in a high gear and you plant your foot. having just bought the car on wednesday last week I'm shocked it would need something so big so soon, does anyone know your rights when purchasing privately? do you think I could approach the seller for a contrebution to the repairs?

Also has anyone recently replaced their Pressure plate? is this a costly affair? if so how much can I expect the repair costs to be, I know they will need to do the oil again but wondered how longer job it would be and if anyone could recommend anywhere to get the parts cheap as I arent a millionare :-)

Anyone got a ramp I could rent so that I could do it myself? thats another option? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also on the look out once the gearbox issue is sorted I need a BOV fitting kit for a HKS SSQV.

Thanks for reading guys n gals

Which workshop was this at?

I would see a subaru specialist (STechnic, MMS, Racetorque, ASG etc) for their diagnosis and estimate to repair the car. I'm guessing something hasn't been installed correctly in the first place, causing your issue.

As for asking the seller for some money to fix the car, no chance. Buyer beware.

^^^ WHS get a subaru specialist to diagnose, could be many things

partially siezed clutch slave cylinder
damaged release bearing
bent clutch fork
air in the clutch hydraulic system

just my 2c

Did the car have this problem before you bought the car? As a price, Mao (evolution R) is offering clutch replacements from $950.

Not a bad price!

As for doing it yourself, do you have some knowledge on replacing clutches? Clutches involve removing the gearbox so if you don't then i would suggest not to, especially when there not that expensive.

Ive done stuff previously but always had someone overseeing what I did, but with being new over here I dont know too many mechanicly minded folks.

I agree that its best to take it somewhere like STechnics or Evolution R, I will look them up, 950 is a very good price is this a special offer?

be nice to grab someone elses opinion, I took the car to Autorite on Parry street as all of my colleagues take their cars there but I wasnt overly impressed with the place or his diagnosis.

either way gonna hopefully take a run up to Stechnics this week, are they open saturdays?

Have Stechnic bleed the hydraulic clutch system, sounds like an air bubble in the system.

Had the same problem as you a couple of weeks ago. Couldn't get into gear and when I did, my car was nearly stalling because clutch not disengaging properly.
Took it to STechnic and they replaced my clutch for a HD one. The thrust bearing was shot and had worn a groove into the sleeve it sits on, which meant I had to get another casing. I think it was around the $1200-$1400 mark for the clutch kit installed.
Had some other things done as well.
STechnic know there stuff and will tell you straight up what the problem is.
Good luck.
