Not meaning to be rude, but are you sure its the timing belt, which is encapsulated / under the black plastic cover on the front of the motor & not just a alternator / power steering belt which you can see when looking under the bonnet?

I know that not just with WRX's but with any cars, a snapped timing belt is always not good news as when it snaps, AFAIK it might take a couple of things with it as well. I hope what broke in your car really isn't the timing belt.

My bunky Lib had one snap - replaced, no dramas - but the SOHC engines are non interferrence.

2.2 and 1.8 are non interference, so its not an issue... everything else, its an issue.

On the question of belt longevity, I did 313xxx Km on the old L series, original twin timing belts from factory, before it got pensioned off on a trade-in.
