Default Restrictor Pill - What it is and why you need it.

The restrictor pill in a Subaru WRX is simply used to change the volume of air traveling down a vacuum line, in the case of most WRXs bar a few of the latest ones and ones running stand alone electronic / manual boost control EBC/MBC systems this restrictor pill is vital.

***Edit as far as I can tell the pill is also required to be in place for a setup using a EBC/MBC also, the EBC/MBC will simply restrict it more giving a higher boost reading****

It's located in the vacuum line between the turbo compressor housing and the T piece that connects to the wastegate solenoid valve and the wastegate actuator. (see below image )

If your vacuum line that should have the required pill is missing the restrictor you will have boost fluctuations and often only hit the wastegate preset pressure of your turbo "often this is a lot lower than the desired boost level"

If the restrictor pill is inserted but twisted or blocked you can have major issues extreme over boosting for example, this could *will* cause all sorts of problems.

Every variation of the WRX requires a specific sized pill:

+1 to that, I had the hoses swapped on my FC RX7, the pill went missing and then it had all sorts of problems >< fuel cutting overboosting fluctuations etc...

I ended up sticking some random piece of junk from the workshop in the line...worked though.

It's not unusual for them to get blocked with oil....

Remove = increased boost?

I only know about them in GTR's - removing them would raise the boost by about 4/5 psi

removing them makes the turbo run wastegate pressure so usually 7ish psi?

Remove and install a boost solenoid(like a grimspeed) at the same time and get a retune?

LoL, i just spotted that. - I doubt it.

Doug fitted one in my car yesterday and didnt charge a cent, the pill itself looks like its worth $1 maybe $2 max, would be interesting to see how much Subaru charge for these as a spare part.

They usually won't sell just the pill, but sell all the lines that go with them.

As usual, the smallest OEM part usually has the highest crack pipe charge to go with it. Evo X lines with pill are under $20 though...

yeah different spot on the gtr's they are right up at the opening to the boost solenoid, simply removing it ups boost from 7 to 14psi, speculation says it was put in there to achieve the 'jap gentlemens agreement' of 206kw power output
