They are great for starting fires.

Have Trust cooler and Mocal oil-stat on mine as it's still a streeter with track days on the cards, Just spend the right cash, seal it properly and add it to the list of things to monitor, Shauld have no probs, For track duties any extra protection agianst toasting oil is a good idea.

Stay away from eBay coolers, the piping does tend to leak onto the hot manifold. I would buy a pwr cooler and get the lines made up buy piretek or something, also don't forget to get a thermo stat or the oil won't reach it's proper operating temp in the winter

I would opt for this instead of a cooler...

I ran a Process West oil cooler on my MY05 for over a year no issues. Didn't notice many gains tbh, and you have to watch the initial warm up period. Saying that, I never ran laps or logging at that time to say there was/wasn't a gain.

People are referring to the firey death of my car after ASG installed the FMIC, headers and motec. Some people think the oil cooler was the cause of the fire. If you do go for one, I would ensure it has braided lines (to stop the rubber lines melting on headers) and a thermostat (for initial running). But before doing it, I would log and make sure you really need it before going down that path.

yep, the haltech has on board logging which will be enabled for the no limits night next week.

thanks for the help guys.

you may need to install an oil pressure/tempurature sensor for the haltech, as normally/factory wiring for ECU's do not give a toss about oil :)

RUSSGT 09-07-2012 10:27 AM

Highly doubt you would need one. How hot could it really get after 5 laps of barbs? I would be more worried about oil and fuel surge.

a bit of an old thread dig here -

So oil coolers are not really required for the occasional barbs and skid pan?
How about baffled sumps and upgraded oil pickups?

Just want to be prepared and do any preventative stuff that's needed as it's the first time on track with the wrx.

So, is it worth the effort, cost & risk of fireball?

Strubaru 01-08-2013 09:28 AM

as russ said, fuel surge is more of a concern

I run an oil cooler, however that is to cope with the heat of anti-lag and warmer rallies. Purchased the cooler & oil filter sandwich plate from Go_gear. I also bought the right size & length braided hoses and speed flow fittings from them too. We fabricated custom alloy brackets to fit it to the rally car in the correct position. Works well. Not really required for occassional motorsport use. Biggest issue is a good fuel pump (Warlbro etc), clean injectors and fuel filter.
