Is the 2008 STI engine the same as the 2006?

At what point does the cost skyrocket in regards to a rebuild?

e.g. building the car for a reliable 300whp as opposed to 400whp etc etc.

360 hp is just pushing that borderline area where stock becomes unreliable.

For those sort of goals, you can get away with a relativly simple rebuild. The problem is, there are so many things that seem cheapish to do 'while your at it'. Unfortunatly for a 2.5l, a lot of these things are neccersary for reliability.

Obviously talk to your workshop of choice and listen to them before most of us. But for the sake of something, I'd go forged pistons, forged rods, sleeves plus all the necersary machining. I think it was Joe who posted a good link a while ago on the machining required to make a 2.5 reliable.

Piss off the EJ257 and buy a factory forged EJ207 - I understand are pretty cheap now days, strap a bigger turbo up boost and have fun. Won't be as responsive but will be a heck more reliable.

I've been through the same problem as you but... my 2.5l was running all the basic mods, tbe, cai, ecu etc etc. Yours however being completely stock... that really sucks... but hey thats the EJ257 for ya! sh1thouse

That would be Built EJ257 to last - look here.

wow, that sucks.....

One thing though, I wouldn't buy a 207. Backwards step from a a car with a 2.5 and you'd need to check the legalities of putting an older engine into a new car.

Time to weigh up the cost, convenience and lesser downtime of a short versus rebuilding your current engine with a greater downtime?

As the others have said above the JDM 207 with that turbo will hit hard or if you can 207 + 2.5L crank + the turbo you have = reliable 2.2L weapon (ala Roscco-san's build).

Mind you if can make a built 257 last go for it, massive torque!
