how mechanically minded are you?

up for a 'fun' project?

buy a similar year sti front cut from japan, & swap everything into your car, sell all your current stock gear to recoup some of the cost, this would leave you around $10k out of pocket to do this (ie zero labour cost if you did it yourself)

the upside is that your car will end up with...

6 speed
brembo's
r180 rear diff
sti blue interior

and you will end up with a car that you could sell for close to $20k

^^ this is what i would do

Russ, I didn't quote the job myself so I'm not sure it was an itemised quote or an over the phone "anywhere from $6500 to $9000 verbal thing having not even seen the car.

Certaily $9000 is not out of the question if the car needs a full timing gear kit, radiator, new oil pump, new engine mounts, clutch, ARP heastuds, injector clean, full cylinder head service with stem seals, valve guides, tappet setting etc. plus all the other stuff like hoses and belts.

Sometimes a car is impeccably maintained and just needs the short motor, lighly face the heads, headstuds, gasket kit and all the parts washed clean, inspected and re-used. There's still a shitload of work to assemble and dress the engine for fitting.

If you are after a bargain basement job there will be shops that will fit the heads without facing or even washing them, goop everything else with RTV, re-use the head bolts etc for probably $4 grand, but not me.

Bug eye Sti's are now Sub 20k, and you still get a car with an engine that might be shagged or dies shortly after.

If he buys the front cut, there will be no rear diff btw :P

The obvious retort to all bugeye comments is to buy a 230,000km GC8 fit blow off valve and advertise for $19,000

LOL okay a 'tower cut' then you technical bastard

i've just been checking kris's prices at rising sun imports for you

this is thier current status, version 7 or 8 direct bolt in plug & play into your bugeye wrx iirc???

2001-2004 sti front cuts are about $8000-9000 undressed(ie no body panel)

We had a 2004 Ver 8 sti front cut last month for $8800. we only hvae the motor and loom left now for $4400 inc GST or a Ver7 motor and loom for $3300

We will have more in the new year at this stage.

We have a undressed bugeye WRX front cut for $3500 inc GST atm (JDM front cut)
