coilovers vs struts
Ok so ive searched the forum and couldnt find anything close to what im asking. From the title the majority of you will have already comprehended what im about to ask, and will have begun to formulate a constructive and intellectually stimulating answer before reading the fine print (lol jokes). But for those who want abit more info read on. Im looking at a set of HSD coilover for my car, its hardly a daily driven car and will be seeing track day etc etc. Im curious about what Struts with decent springs have to offer compared to the coilovers mentioned above. The HSD's are around the 1400buk mark to my door so work around struts including a set of spring around that budget. 1 2 3 GO.

Struts with progressive springs can work well but you wont get the ability to adjust them like you do with coilovers. I ran Bilsteins with progressive springs in my old Liberty and they were a good compromise but if you are going to track and not daily drive then I would go the HSD coilovers hands down. I am very happy running HSD' on my Forester which has been both a daily driver and gets tracked some too.

Track car, adjustability - coilovers. So many more parameters you can tweak to "tune" your suspension.
I think Balistic still does the HSD's?

Tony I forget what model WRX you have but if it's an MY01-MY07 you can go this shock/spring setup:
Tokico D SPEC Shocks and Eibach Spring package suit 01-07 WRX - Pro Speed Racing Will be good on the street and more than enough for the odd track outing (if you want more grip, get some stickier tyres really and combine it with this). If you are going to track it frequently (i.e. twice a month or more), then as A.Dave said go for some HSD HR coilovers (or the TT model if you want something more forgiving but just as adjustable). Bang for buck there isn't really anything that can match them. Can also go TEIN super streets from DemonTweeks (UK) for around $1700 shipped from memory as another alternative.

I have the same model as you Monkee. Curious about the lack of adjustability on the struts? I was trolling the vendors section and scrolled past a set of struts that had a dial on the side. Im guessing this is to adjust rebound?

Had a set of HSD HR coilovers for a while (around 18,000km) and enjoyed them a lot when doing skid pans.
Had them turned down to the 3rd or 2nd lowest setting and they would still jump/skip over bumps, lets just say that it wasn't fun driving up Flinders St in Yokine. I believe the spring rates I had were about 7kg (or 392lb/in). As Shane has mentioned there are Tokico/Koni struts that had limited adjustabilty (i.e. rebound) and coupled with some decent springs they should be just as good as coilovers for daily duties but a bit easier on the back/kidneys/etc. You also have the choice of linear or progressive springs. Linear will be firmer and able to take more with out feeling sloppy, but progressive will be a bit more comfortable on the roads.

Funny you should mention linear springs. After you told me about them in the other thread i did a fair bit of searching and you cannot buy linear springs ofr struts. they are only really available for coilovers.
How do i know what weight springs i should buy? It sounds like yours may have been over sprung for the weight of your car?

This could be a possibility, from memory I opted to go for the same if not 1kg less than what other owners had used in similar models (e.g. 08-10 wrx/08-10 forrester/etc).
