my money is on the alternator. because day time driving may be okay but the fact that your lights dimmed out and car shut off when driving at night and that it starts again after a few minutes. so maybe get a sparky to check it out.

Not sure if it fits 05 however I have a 01-02 alternator lying around my shed that needs to go. It's a 30 minute turnaround to install. PM me if interested.

Alternators and charging circuits can be tricky things and should not fooled with unless you know what you are doing. Modern alternators (including the WRX) have an exciter (trigger) circuit. In simple terms, when the ignition is switched on, a feed is sent to the alternator to "tell" it to start charging. LED's are a diode and will only let current pass in one direction. It is quite possible the LED dash light you installed interfered with the charge circuit, causing some of the problem.
Even though the car seems to be running fine now you have removed the LED's, take it to an auto electrician and get it checked. The charge circuit or alternator may be damaged. If the alternator starts over charging for some reason, it could cause you a whole world of pain.
Better to be safe than sorry.
