Default Power loss and surging/shuttering

Hi all,

Just wanting some advise on a problem I'm having.

My car has just started to surge and shutter on peak boost. I've noticed the boost jumps around erratically. Also from anywhere between 1-10 psi it isn't pulling and slightly feels like it may be shuttering a little. You really notice it at peak boost, about 15 psi.

I have a '99 WRX, done about 227000kms and the only mod is an after market boost controller.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Brent

AFM would be the first thing I would check.

Is there anyway of testing the AFM or is it just a case of replacing it?

It's a Turbosmart boost tee, manual controller. I've had the boost controller on for a while now with no problems.

For sure it is the air flow meter. Sounds like a classic case

Get a known good one, swap it in, see if it makes a difference. You can clean your current one with circuit board cleaner (not degreaser or carby cleaner or WD40) and you might get a few more months out of it

Don't be thrashing your car around at the moment either, A new AFM is much cheaper than a new engine

If you do need a new AFM , I bought one yesterday in Cloverdale = he sells numerous Genuine Air Flow Meters,TPS,Coil Packs etc at much discounted prices.

Seemed like a good bloke too, Subaru AFM's are $150
