gc8 wrx with legacy engine?

Hey guys.

Not to sure if i am posting in the right part here but let me know if i'm not.
Im a newb to the scooby scene and forum?

I'm looking at buying a gc8 wrx wagon and apparently it has a legacy engine in it. I have searched the net and forums for possibilities of what engine might of been dropped into it but i can't seem to find anything or it being done. All i know for sure is that it is a 5 speed manual 2.0 liter turbo but cant work out if its a EJ20H/EJ20R/EJ208 or others. Has anyone heard of this conversion being done before and what would be the most likely engine that has been dropped in or be able to point me in the right direction to find out. Might be able to find out from the guy selling but unsure.

Also would it be considered a good buy for 15k (starting price before negotiations)?
From what i know so far it has full race coil overs suspension setup (not a cheap one but unsure of brand, but think its worth close to 20k), low ks engine (not running crazy boost levels, i think 9psi), low ks on chassis, owned by a mechanic. I'm sure i will find out a lot more info when i get to talk to the guy.

Would greatly appreciate any info anyone has to offer.
Thanks

Hi Layzie,

Legacy's are the overseas versions of the Liberty here in Australia.
Liberty's run the EJ20G and I think the GC8's run a EJ20K(someone else will need to confirm). The conversion usually goes the other way, GC8 WRX/STi into a Liberty but I guess it can go both ways.

Ask for a brand name and i think you will quickly find that its not 20k worth of suspension gear... And unless your getting an 02(bugeye) STi worth of gear then no, do you have a link of said car?

Good luck and Welcome

For 15k id had better be something special - got a link?

Thanks for the quick reply lachy.
Nah there is no link been talking to him about it. I will be talking to him about it on sat as he will be servicing my bros car so I will get alot more info about it then. I will post up the mods/specs when I find out what they are. Im pretty sure he has pumped close to 30k into it.
Thanks again.

Get him to take it to a Subaru specialist who can do a pre-purchase inspection (S Technic in Maddington, Blue Star in Wangara, Maximum Motor Sport in Malaga) and they should be able to tell you more than he will and might be able to give you a rough idea of what the car is worth.

But IMO unless it has 6 speed, brembos, EJ207/Very well built EJ20G, he is asking way to much. And I think if he has pumped 30k into it, it will be running more than 9 psi just as a heads up. :)

Don't discount that the motor could be from a later model twin turbo Legacy... they can still be converted back to a single turbo setup with the right parts. But even still, as others have said, it still sounds pricey.

Quick check to see if its a Gen 1 Legacy motor is to look at the coil packs. if its bolted on with 2 bolts its Gen 1 Legacy.

I spent 40k on a Liberty and got 7 back

Investment does not equal return

Early Lib/Legacy running closed deck EJ20... Something? You'd know wouldn't you TJ?

teejay 31-07-2013 11:29 PM

Yup early are closed deck - then went semi then open as Subaru found it a way to save costs.

If its the tt stuff they run more compression so its not overly a good thing - more responsive but if using the stock ecu more prone to ping.

most likely worth between 8 to 12k depending...
