Default R180 rear end setup

Long story short...

I've been running my WRX with a R160 with a cusco plated diff (4.444 final drive), i've used this setup for a while and im now on my fifth differential.

All the differentials seem to be fine when they are installed but over time each one starts to have the same issues with whining after around six months to a year.

I am considering an upgrade to an R180 (4.444) diff , from my research and advice from dtrally (thanks Doug). I'll be needing a few other parts to make it all work.

5x100 rear hubs from a STI (01 - 03)
R180 Diff from a GC8 Type RA (4.444)

My question is, should i be sourcing R180 driveshafts from a STI (01 -03) also?

Is it worth making up hybrid drive shafts to allow the R180 diff to work with R160 hubs? (guessing strength will be a big issue)

Advice?

I believe you want an auto shaft to create a hybrid for your use. I believe this is what doug did for my Foz as I am still running R160 hubs 5 x100 with the 6MT. I am nearly a 1 1/2 years now with this set up and no issues knock wood.

There seems to be a fair amount of whinging across different forums regarding the R160 and 4.444 setup.

I'm wondering if its the added pressure on the crown and pinion running this Cusco two way plated diff. It could also be that the R160's that im sourcing from various people are just a bit long in the tooth.

So my options could be..

R180 upgrade..
Replacement of the crown and pinion (brand new) with my existing R160.
Replacement of the crown and pinion (secondhand) from a wreck.

Intra,

You want THIS if you intend on running 160 hub spline hub with a 180 diff. The downside is you need the 180 drive shaft ends to go into the diff & adapt onto your existing 160 drive shafts. As you have rightly said though, you need bug eye or 03 180 drive shafts if you want to retain the 5 X 100 PCD. Finding 180 drive shafts that have snapped (in the center) so you can use the stubs could prove difficult & I'm pretty sure (when I was looking anyway), that the 180 shafts are around $150 each & the hubs will be similar in price each from the 5 X 100 PCD STI. You will also obviously need tail shaft work also, not sure what car you have but generally I believe an auto shaft works.

I have a 6 speed with auto shaft, running a R180 (3.9) , with the linked conversion from R180 diff into R160 hub spline. I am now pushing a decent amount of power through it & have not had any issues yet. I know that it is a weak link though & I choose not to be a muppet & do rev limiter launches.

Full R180 conversion would be the best option, although possibly more expensive. To be honest I with I had done that, but I purchased my complete rear end from another member on here.

There's a R180 4.44 with shafts for sale on Ozfoz at the moment, he's chasing $700 for the lot. He says it came out of an 07 sti but I think he means the 'tuned by sti' model which came with that setup.(R180 diff to R160 hubs)
