Exclamation RPM slow to drop when cold

Hey guys,

First post here and I did try searching first so appologies if this has been covered before!!

Basically when I start my car from cold (EJ20 MY05 GX Impreza M/T) I have noticed that it is very slow to return the RPM back to normal between gear changes. For example:

Cold start. Accelerate to 2800rpm in first gear and change to 2nd. RPM will hold at 2800 for approx 2 seconds and then gradually begin to fall at a rate of about 200rpm per second.

Its a bit of a first world problem but it does make that first few gear changes in the car highly unpleasureable as the engine will be spinning too fast for the change to the next gear to be smooth (sort of feels like it lurches forward).

Some things to mention:

- ONLY happens for the first 2-3 minutes of operation and must be from a totally cold start
- I can sometimes avoid it happening by revving the gear change out to like 3-3.5k

Just wondering if anyone here has ideas of where I should look? I have taken off the IACV and cleaned it as best I can, but it wasnt all that dirty to begin with to be honest. Also have a can of upper engine cleaner to run through the beast but just waiting for my next oil change to do that.

Cheers
Ryan

It's the needle reaching for the limiter and telling you that you're a poofter for changing at 2800rpm

(sorry I can't help, but there needs to be at least one unhelpful post per thread made by a new user on this forum )

Take some video and post it up I am intrigued.

Ok I'm not really.

I thought this was normal cold start auto choke operation.

I always warm my car up for 1-2 minutes.

Yeah, sounds like normal cold start operation. Have you tried blipping the throttle once from idle, out of gear, clutch pedal depressed? Mine revs high until I do this.

Best guess is that it's normal.
When cold, the ECU will hold higher revs at idle.
Moving off with a cold engine will see the car still maintaining slightly higher revs as the throttle is released. As a result the transition down to the elevated idle position will be less abrupt. This is also affected by lower ambient air temps as the ECU is reading the intake air and adjusting to suit.

If it keeps happening once warmed up i'd be looking for a solution but it doesn't sound like an issue if only a cold idle effect.

Cheers lads!! If its by design then I wont bother doing anything about it. This is the first petrol car ive owned in nearly 3 years so just getting used to all the little things again. My 3.2L diesel navara behaves the same even if the temps are in the negatives

normal cold start, dont stress. Boys are right, blip the throttle, or maybe let the car warm up a little before shooting off.. or maybe you can install a heater in your garage?

^^^^ What you don't just start car, bash the rev limiter and side step the clutch?
