Default WRX gearbox

Hey guys,

Are the MY11+ gearboxes stronger than the MY06 ? I use to have an 06 and was constantly reminded how weak it was. Didn't break it in the end with 280 hp and 55K on the odometer. Obviously it's how to use and abuse and everyone mileage is different.

Thanks !

Haven't owned a MY06 so my experience might not be valid.

Have participated in several skid pans where the car was launched several times, have also driven the car hard for most of its life with no issues.

Now sitting at ~56000 km.

I don't think they made a 'stronger' 5 speed, they are all the same size etc, its just how they are driven really.

Ah I see. I just thought they would have made is stronger to accommodate the extra power from the VF52.

Surely they would have had to increase the strength at some stage. so much more torque is getting put down by the new rexs as apposed to older gen ones in stock form.

GD 5 speeds onwards are built stronger than the GC8's 5 speeds, can't tell u more than that.

This is true, the GD onwards boxes have the same heat treatments and shot peening as the earlier STI-RA 5 speeds. Much stronger then GC8 WRX boxes.
There are differences in the later 5 speeds. They changed the synchroes and the design of some of the bearings 06 onwards.
09 onwards there are different synchroes again on first and second, and a different heat treatment on the main shaft and first gear. For the increased torque.
They're not bullet proof though, it depends how you drive, if you abuse it enough, you can still kill it.
I'm making over 300hp at all 4 in my car, and the box has done 252000km's, still kicking though.
