GC8 2.5L conversion confusion
Hi everyone,
ive been doing a little research on 2.5 litre conversions to gc8 wrx's.. Cant quite figure out what is used to do it.. Is it more common to stick an 03 or so sti engine and gearbox straight in, which i can imagine would be alot of work.. Or do people use a gc8 n/a 2.5 block? Ive also read that the ej20 heads have a smaller diameter than the ej25 bore.. So i thought this wouldnt work? Anyway, its just a thought.. Not sure if ill go that way just would like to know the details if anyone knows or has done it. Thanks! using the Perth-WRX mobile app |

Pretty sure '03 is still 2.0lt but I'm fairly sure Gav will have the answer to this one. If you're lucky he'll also have one tucked away in the garage somewhere to sell to you :P

To the OP, 03 STis are 2lt unless you're getting your info from the US which sounds like it as you're talking about a 2.5lt na GC8 motor which came on the USDM 2dr RS's and their STis have always come with a 2.5t. Where as oz STi up until MY06 came with 2.0lt and Japan still run a 2.0lt. Plenty of non US info out there.

You will have to change a few things so the ECU can read the triggers correctly, namely changing the cam wheels & crank trigger. If the 2.5 has AVCS a small amount of work is required on the heads. There will be some sensor swaps to do, including a throttle body adaptor plate, change of some connectors for the injectors & so on.
You will also need a tuneable ECU as everything on the engine characteristics have changed & the GC8 ECU is not able to be tuned from memory, a Power FC would be the easiest, cheapest & most cheerful option. You may want to consider a set of headers too whilst the engine is out. Possibly put a new fuel pump in too, if you are still running on the original one.

So in other words, a swap with a later model 2.5 is going to be alot of effort.. Because ive already done so much work to the engine, i really wanted to use a gc8 block, so that i dont have to change all my overspeed pulleys, painted parts and intake manifold with my new fuel rails and stuff on it. Because im guessing if i use a newer block that all my stuff wont bolt back onto it.
Ive already done all the usual mods, firstly ive dropped in a v3 sti engine with the yellow sidefeed injectors, walbro fuel pump (255 i think), fuel pressure regulator, the equal fuel rail mod, power fc, td06 turbo and you know, tb exhaust and tmic, k&n filter & all that little stuff. So anyway, surely theres an easier way of getting a 2.5 in my gc8 than swapping the entire motor with a new style one? Are there no n/a 2.5 blocks in aus that can be used with new internals? using the Perth-WRX mobile app |

Have you reached maximum power of an EJ20? What is your 1/4 mile time, or dyno hp reading? How much power and how fast down the 1/4 are you seriously aiming to acheive?
For the money and effort involved to drop a 2.5ltre in, are you sure that same money and effort couldn't be put into the 2litre and acheive more?? |

Oh yeah i see what you mean about the heads will allow the manifold to line up but what about the brackets for the altenator and power steering and aircon, arent those brackets mounted on the manifold and the block?
Nope i havent got it to max power, i havent even had it tuned with the power fc and the new sti engine yet because i broke the gearbox before i could tune it. Last dyno i had was at 263 bhp i think so yes its not exactly fast and ive got a long way to go, but im just really curious about this conversion using the Perth-WRX mobile app |
