gearbox/clutch problem
 

hello everyone,
some of you may know of the little issue I had with the clutch a few days ago (aka clutch disappeared). I got a Exedy Stage 1, new bearings, new slave cylinder and machined flywheel put in so I can get back on the road again.
now, the car is shuddering quite a bit when I put it in first gear or reverse since I got the new clutch installed and I kinda understand that I will just have to wait until the clutch is fully bedded in.
Question is, is it normal to feel like it is shuddering to the point it feels like the whole car is shaking? or old engine and tranny mounts are to blame?
also, I have been finding it a bit difficult to shift into and out of first and second gear since i got the new clutch. it is fine most of the time, but sometimes it just feels like something is blocking my shift and I have to force it out of a gear. This doesn't happen to any other gears, just first and second. anyone happen to know what it could be?

It won't be engine mounts on a Subaru. That's an old wive's tale from back in the vintage car days when cars had a solid rod from the pedal to the clutch fork, like HQ Holden era.

So, maybe gear box then..... :eek:

sounds like like it may need to be bled properly for starters, gearbox and or engine mounts could attribute to some shudder if they're ancient original items, won't be the cause of your other issues as doug said

Bleed it first...then if it's still notchy in first & second - Check the pedal stroke as the clutch isn't fully releasing.

Not usually the gearbox, usually the clutch, the flywheel or sometimes poor installation.

Does the car select the gears easily when the engine is off? If so, the clutch is dragging slightly ie; not fully releasing. From my experience, once it's shuddering, no amount of 'bedding in' will ever make it good.

It is easy to change gear when the car is off. Occasionally, it is difficult to change into any gear with the engine on and when it is stationary.
The shuddering only happens when I feather the clutch into first or reverse. Doesn't happen when driving normally or change gear once I get going.

a simple test to see if your hydraulics are fine is when stationary try to select reverse
if easy all adjustments and bleeding is fine

if grating then you have a travel issue that needs to be sorted - either bleeding or adjusting

where is the take up on the pedal is it low middle or high

you also said you fitted a new clutch
if you understand how a clutch plate works it has springs inside it - this is to help reduce shudder - if yo fit a performance style clutch this springs are rated different to std and so shudder my occur

the clutch kit could also be faulty

did you install it yourself?

got a pretty well known mechanic to fit it and yes, i am thinking the shuddering is due to the new clutch and I am just not used to having a heavier clutch.

now I have a feeling that my problem with not being able to shift out or into gears is simply air in the clutch line. whenever i am lock into gear or lock out of a gear, I can just pump the clutch a few times and it releases itself. does it sound like air in the clutch line?

Won't hurt you to bleed the line a bit more and see if it fixed it. Could be on the right track.
