Coilovers lowering themselves
 

Hi guys,

Just looking to see if anybody has had the same issue as me. I bought some new HSD HR coilovers a couple of months ago and the ride and everything has been good but I have noticed the fronts are slowly lowering themselves.

I'll adjust them to the right height, and then over the course of a month to 6 weeks they will have lowered enough for me to notice. Half an inch maybe? I've tightened the rings as much as I physically can and have had to set my height twice now.

No such issues with the rears, they haven't moved at all.

Any ideas on somewhere I can take my car for it to be looked at? Hopefully its just something I am doing wrong, but if an issue is found I'll try and get them fixed by HSD.

Yeah they'll settle a little bit in my limited experience.

My rears have settled about 10-20mm after 2-3 years.

DMS40s. Will just be adjusting the rears again with my next alignment. I was planning on going to see John Fowler

Jack - Did you adjust your HSD ride height by the lower spring perch or by the lower mounting bracket?

The lower mounting bracket(bit that bolts to the wheels) should be used, if you fiddled with the lower spring perch then this could be your issue as you've messed with the preload and spring travel (and also probably have the locking ring loose).

Teins are adjusted via the lower spring perch but others like HSDs/BCs and many others aren't.

Yeah I figured they'd settle a bit but the amount they're lowering by seems to be a bit much. I need to go and see John Fowler soon anyway to get a proper alignment done, just hard to get to him with work hours. Maybe he can have a look and shed some light.

RJ - Yes I adjusted the lower mounting bracket, haven't touched preload settings beyond making sure the lock rings were tight.

Adjusting the pre-load spring nuts would have no effect of the ride height of the car. It would just fuck with the pre-load and you could end up with binding and a cracked spring if you go to far.

If I recall you went with softer springs? Like mentioned above id say softer springs mixed with lower quality will result in the spring settling down a fair bit. If you are adjusting the height via the preload nut then you are just taking away sag which is not what you want to do.


EDIT: you replied before me haha. I'd say softer spring weight vs quality.

Preload spring collar does affect the ride height.

If I remember rightly AD has the same configuration as me, 7kg springs on HRs. I'll shoot him a PM and see if he has had the same issue at all. By all accounts he seemed pretty happy with his setup though.

If it's just a matter of the spring settling I assume it will settle to a point and then be done and not require constant adjustments?

Had hsd hr with 7kg spring from memory and never had this issue.
Wheels world were responsible for the installation and alignment.
