if one of the pulley bolts is over torqued & strips the thread into the block this will cause the pulley (and belt) to move forward and wear into the centre timing belt cover, will also shred the belt on the outside face

Sold the car back to the dealer. Got sick of the run around and time it will be off the road.. I struck a deal and came out about 5k worse off. Best of luck to them and it's not longer my problem. Other than that was a nice car but just a lemon

That is fuuuuucked up. You should never have to wear 5k because a dealership sold a lemon.

Care to name the dealer so others can know to avoid the car in the future?

I'd hit 'em up for your $5k and a hire/loan car for a week or two.

Westside autos. I am not going to bag them out. They are what they are and I just needed to move on and get out of it and stop wasting my own time and money trying to fix up a car that I am never going to be happy. I am thinking of reporting it all to consumer protection and see if they have anything they can do to recover the extra $$$ wasted... Even if they donated it to charity it would be a better outcome.

I had a look at your stripped down engine on Monday and it was fairly rooted...I'm sure Neil pointed out the number of other issues apart from the obvious. Basically it was never rebuilt properly. I think getting rid of it is reasonable rather than fighting over the cost of a fix/new engine. Personally I would be pursuing the $5k shortfall...and also make sure I removed any extras I put on the car...eg swap back standard exhaust for the upgraded one you put in.
All in all a sad story....this has cost you $ and time through no fault of yours. Good luck!

It's all been sorted out. I enjoyed the car but never had faith in it since the first problem. It just wasn't worth my time and effort to fight for that couple of $$$. I figured even if the engine was new I would only be able to sell it at a similar trade in price anyway... Plus I did notice an 08 sti on Guntree for 29k that has been dropping in price month by month...
