The EJ255 "Is it Really That Weak"

4 Attachment(s)
Hey people :D

So i have been searching :downtown: through the forums at the various threads on the newer generation Subaru engines, the EJ255 & EJ257...and i see that basically everybody favors the EJ207 for reliability & higher power output etc.

I have also been researching on the internet (import tuner) Here is a good read for anybody owning a EJ255 & EJ257: The Truth Behind The Subaru EJ-Series Engines

Notice that Crawford Performance say that at a power figure of 400awhp: "For an EJ255 and EJ257, all the block needs is a set of forged pistons . 400 whp is when cylinder pressures are high enough that a random knock event can take out the stock pistons. The rest of the internals are more than up to the task"

Now The reason i posted this is because recently i have purchased & installed the following on my MY13 WRX, but i am really thinking about buying a EJ257 short-block, as i really want to reach the 380-400AWHP Mark :p

- Fast Motorsport Top Mount Intercooler
- Takeda Cold Air intake
- Turbosmart Plumback BPV
- 1000cc Five O Motorsport Injectors
- Deatschwerks 65c High Flow Fuel Pump
- Turbo Back Exhaust 3" Throughout
- Tuned by Evolution R - (300awhp @ 17-19psi)

Here is the block i am thinking about purchasing: Celtic Motorsport

So Here are my questions:

1. What is your opinion/has anybody bought a forged block from Celtic Motorsport?

2. Is there a cheaper alternative? e.g can i do anything else to achieve say 350awhp with what i already have & call it a day ( i know the EJ255 is pushing it here...pistons, rods etc..) i don't want knock knock.....boom

3. How strong is the 5 speed transmission in the MY13 Model WRX? Will i be pushing my car down the off ramp like my last car? (500rwhp XR6 Turbo, ZF gearbox & input shaft said bye bye ;P) Would this 5 speed still be suitable with a forged short-block, increased power?

4. If i was to buy a EJ207 instead...will it be direct drop in, i wont need to buy anything else? everything bolts on? I would much prefer to 2.5L !

Give me some thoughts :blob1:

You are right on the limit boost wise for an internally stock EJ255 as far as a lot of people's experiences have gone. May I suggest getting some largish cams in there to get you closer to the mid tree fiddys?

That'll still be a kick ads quick car. As for the gearbox, the later 5 speeds are a fair bit more robust but still not as strong as the STI 6 speed. It all comes down to how much and how hard you punish it though. Repeated flat shifts and 7krpm launches are sooner or later going to end in a big bill one way or another.

Desizing to a 207 would be pretty crazy for a street car IMHO

Thanks phizzle, i figured i would be getting close to "pushing my luck" with the stock block, if i were to purchase larger cams, would the stock internals be reliable at 350? This isnt my first car..luckily this is my baby, i have already had my phase of expenses due to driving in my past vehicles....lesson learn't...this one is looked after very well, so no dropping the clutch or smashing gears, just driving it hard...that is all :P

Thanks nick, There custom builds are actually reasonable...and include freight ;)

Hey Luke, Have you read Tino's build thread?

I would also be inclined to speak with Michael South if you want a big power ej255/257 with reliability.

Ignore 50% of the American Internet info you read and throw the other 50% away......

A 2.5L offers much better off-boost drivability. The top end power remains the same between the 2.0 & 2.5.

Rossco:
Thanks allot for that, ill be looking at that thread asap. I may even give mike a call as well and see what he recommends, i would like to keep the 2.5L, i dont really see the point of downsizing....but i had to ask haha

Buy Rigg's unicorn block build ... Make 500.

400 American hp = 320 Australian

If would be getting Tony Knight in SA to build anything hardcore - he was involved in Tino's build, and he is putting together Justin's new Liberty engine after the racewars bang.

He doesn't flap his wang on the net but he is probably the best guy in Aus if you are serious.
