Possible shaft play?

Hi, PWRXers,

Recently (particularly last week or so), I notice there is metal vibrating noise come from the engine bay directly in front of me. I thought its my CAI bracket coming loose, but it's not. It only happens when i accelerate hard regardless what rpm the engine is. PLUS, in last month I have added a litre of Redline 10W40 to keep the oil level above minimum!!!. As Im doing my exams, I havent got time to physically check the turbo. Do you guys think my turbo has shaft play now?

If i need a new turbo, I want more response rather than power. How about the following list sounds like:
Kendo dynamic TD05H 20G (billet wheel, 7cm hot side) tuned to 19PSI?
Kendo UEL header
Bosch high impedance 1000CC injector (better idle?)
DEI heat wrap (dont want big money on ceramic coating as Im gonna seal the under tray beeter to stop rain water) + heat spray
Redline 5W30 for winter, 10W40 for summer
SBC three port boost controller
BeeR rev limiter to disable fuel cut (thought rev cut is safer than fuel cut)

Thanks in advance.

I would be confirming what the actual problem is before you start shopping for a new snail.

Any workshop on the workshop thread that is closest will be able to inform you of the potential problem, cost and options.

May turn out to be something minor.

Good luck

Yes I will confirm the problem and get a compression test before I buy anything, just want an idea how the problem could be. THX

Hopefully it's something simple like a loose heat shield?

Checked it, its secured.

Btw, what does knocking sound like, I know tuner can hear the engine knocking.

Is there any power loss or hesitation?
Is there any smoke at idle / when driving?

These are the symptoms of MPS turbo failure which is shaft play (gay hair dresser jokes aside) related 90% of the time.

If it is holding targeted boost and not smoking then chances are it isn't shaft play. Could still be a turbo seal, but that would still present with a small amount (or big amount if ignored for long enough) of smoke when idling for prolonged period of time.

Boost level is same, and I don't think there is smoke on idle. Better have a compression test done first.

Edit: I will double check the boost level when i drive it to make sure the boost isn't dropping.

Good idea, but perhaps just take it easy for a while until you / your workshop of choice confirm what the issue is or at least narrow it down.

Ringlands might have finally called it quits. You are already running heavier oil than oem and now need a litre to top it up...

Is there any vibration Gordon or just noise?

s20525xxx 15-06-2014 01:48 PM

Just noise.
