What about time frame for those sort of rebiulds? Like from the time you drop the keys off to the time you pick them up? Just an estimate of course

$2000 just to put a motor together.

EJ207 short motor from Regents Subaru

Around 6-8 weeks seems the norm. Usually many unforseen circumstances crop up. |

ah, thanx. Thought it would take a while. I actually imgained it could take longer and probably would with "unforseen circumstances." |

Option 1. Fit a second hand imported jap motor. This will take 2 days minimum, drive in drive out. Want a warranty on the engine? If its stuffed and you need to exchange it then you pay your mechanics labour twice. how much is that I hear you ask... Labour to swap engines will be 16hrs x $65/hr = $1040 +oils, fluids and seals, plus the engine some where between $2500 to $7000 with fries and a thick shake Option 2. Building an engine should take time, so you get to see and enjoy every stage :happy8: No need to rush it, 4 weeks to a year sounds good to me. To fit some forged pistons alone would see the car off the road for a week, then running it in... Depending on how competent and honest your mechanic is will determine how many unforseen circumstances you encounter. If you choose your mechanic carefully these problems can be kept to a minimum...its the second engine rebuild within a year that hurts :( |
ej207, about the only motor to go and no need to play with aftermarket gear in it as its already strong as. If u have the money 2.2 would be nice too :)

+
EJ207 short motor from Regents Subaru
=$3600 ?? Sub Total =$5600 + gasket kit. Labour breakdown: 30 hours @ $65/hr for the $2k in labour: 6 hours to remove and strip accessories / heads and cams? 16 hours to assemble long motor??? 8 hours to refit and debug things like the starter motor fitment, block the extra breather line? Excludes custom tune. |
buy JME's 2.2!
|
EJ207 is around 3500 plus gaskets. Its factory assembled, and fitting involves installing the heads and the ancillaries, and dropping it back in.
buy JME's 2.2!
Ok thats a JUN Billet 2.2 Crank, rods and 3 pistons  with 10mm ARP Head studs...for circa $5500 1 New piston...$1000 ? EJ20 full closed deck block $990 exchange, so add delivery to and from Qld Port and polish heads $990 (includes reconditioning) EXCHANGE Labour: fully build long engine, $2000 + Crankshaft bearings, rod bearings, seals add $600 ?? Sub total $11,080 + plus tuning, fuel mods, injectors, turbo... |
that is the real deal!

Spooled, aka Alex recently did the EJ207 SHORT MOTOR, dropping it back in thingo. Im pretty sure he got very little change from $6k... Alex can you confirm? BTW you should have seen his old engine, the big end let go pounding the piston into the head...30psi will do it every time on a standard WRX motor  |

there are 5 types of EJ20 blocks
Open Deck as found in all naturally aspirated 2.0 Litre imprezas. Open Deck EJ20G/EJ20K as found in all wrx's and some STI's till 1998 Open Deck EJ205 as found in wrx's 1998-2005 Closed Deck as found in early liberty RS's, BG5/GTB twin turbo liberties till 92, and the version 3 STI in 1997 Semi-Closed Desk as found in EJ207 from 2001 through till present. All engines have varients of piston type/quality, compression ratios, i'll post these shortly. |
but the jun crank & rods costs upwards of $10,000 alone..its not baad value
agreed, its a bloody good price and worth considering given the discussion is on EJ20* rebuilding options. The extra torque of a 2.2 + JUN quality internals is very attractive. I added a fully closed block and improved heads to the theoretical parts list just to stay with the qwality theme. Chee, I use a calculator :D Disclaimer: DO NOT attempt to rebuild your engine at home without the supervision of adults or assistance of a Motec ECU |
Another street option is to drop in a low Km Liberty B4 Engine.
Fred at Swan has some sitting on the shelf for $5500 from as low as 5000km. The B4 came with a higher compression ratio of 9:1, reported to have forged pistons and the same bucket over shim improved heads of the STi with sexy sodium filled valves :love2: . Remembering the MY94 -MY02 Aus spec WRX was 8:1 They swap over all the sensors and other goodies from your standard GC8 WRX engine. The high comp engine responds well with the underated TD04. Be careful...I suspect if they are pushed with a VF**turbo it may all end in tears. :3gears: |
EJ207!!!
It may cost u 6k in the end, but its strong as hell....just ask Stacey ;) |
Remembering our Aus spec WRX is 8:1
my03 wrx is 9:1 |
Im quite sure the 99-00 WRX was 8.5:1 while the 99-00 STI was 8.0:1
K double checked and I am incorrect. 8.0:1 on both the MY99-00 STI and WRX. 9.0:1 on 03+ wrx. |
yep editted my post as well...just shows there are so many options.
BTW has anyone got any first hand experience from fitting a VF** series on a vanilla model MY03 or later 9:1 compression engine? You would think it could pull some pretty good numbers if you could keep it from pinging? |
8.5:1 on the 02+ EJ207

Perfourmance built my short block... oldest 2.5 in perth and its an N/A 2.5 liberty block originally... they basically made it a closed deck machine.

__________________ That is RIGHT on the money, there are several builders out there that dont know what there doing (speaking from experience). Imo if u want to rebuild a EJ20, u might as well just buy a new sti short block that comes standard with forged pistons. Why fork out all that extra money, when u could have a workshop fck it up and you loose out. The EJ207 will take all the abuse u could throw at it. |
wheres jmes engine for sale?
