Mechanics Advice - Old Rex, Thicker Oil?
Guys,
After some advice from the mechanics on the forum, my wrx is an MY99 with just over 400,000kms and burns a bit of oil plus blows smoke under acceleration. Thinking of switching to a heavier oil but I don't understand the grading and what would be best. I use 10w40 Castrol at the moment. Any help much appreciated. Josh

I use Penrite 10w-50.. I wouldn't use anything else. Very high quality oil.

Im always intrigued by posts like this. Do you have any reason for it? Why is this oil different/better than other oils?

It's not Russ - It's shit - but V8 Supercars promote it so it must be 'good'.

I've actually found with old cars or even ones that are on their last legs, the less shit you change on them the better. If its survived that long on your castrol i'd keep feeding it that.

Oil is cheap, let it burn and see how far that donk will go. Got more chance of issues going for thicker oils.

I would be using castrol GTX high mileage 15w-50 or any brand that is 15w-40/50/60
worn seals, rings and/or head gasket will cause the smoke, need to find out what colour it is Something like this might help but it will be short term LIQUI-MOLY – AUSTRALIA – ENGINE OIL RESEALER | 2782 Found this, will help explain oil ratings. http://www.racq.com.au/~/media/pdf/r...ignations.ashx |

I've always used Penrite, passed on from my dad, who swears by it.
I've never heard anyone speak badly of it. Penrite probably have the most comprehensive range of lubricants and fluids in Aus. I always recognised the brands like Shell and Castrol as being the 'high advertising' oil. Each to their own... |
