Yeah we did it the day we found out the noise came from the diff. The mechanic refered to it as period noise. Never heard of the term myself but there you go.

The idea of the LSD sounds awesome but as you said, probably isnt the centre thats causing the issues.

Diffs can get what is called "period noise" at a certain speed - usually around 80-90 k's & disappears at higher speed. Although annoying, it won't cause any damage & can be fixed by getting your Crown wheel & Pinion gears lapped. This can be a tad expensive & "bang for buck", I'd probably put up with the noise unless it's a really nice vehicle.
Manual Gearbox and Diff Treatment- Nulon Australia

A possible option, but likely the crown and pinion.

The larger PTFE particles circulate with the normal gear lubricant and create a cushion between gear surfaces, dramatically reducing gear pitting. This cushioning effect is important in that it reduces noise caused by minor irregularities of mating surfaces which are responsible for the very common "period noise" experienced in differentials.

Well I got some qoutes for getting the diff lapped and my god, shit isnt cheap... Cheapest offer i got was $1,700!

So being that lappings been ruled out, I need some help with trying to figure out where I can find a replacmwnt diff and what one ill need. By the looks of it, it has to be a r160 but im unsure what ratio i'll need.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
