Strange howling/ringing noise at 97-100kph

G'day Guys,

I've been doing some digging on the NAISOC and here about a particular problem my MY05 WRX has but have had no luck at all, but before we go into details here's a video of the noise:

Its that reasonably high pitched howl (sounds like an owl) and I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is. I've ran the following tests and the noise appears in all of them:

Happens with Cruise control off and on
Disapears as soon as you go over 101-102kph
Happens in 4th and 5th gear
If you guys have any ideas what this is/have any suggestions I'd be forever grateful.

Cheers.

Got a Bosch fuel pump? mine made crazy noises at certain speeds, nearly drove me insane till after about a month we worked out the problem, mine sounded like someone twanging a banjo in the back door.

Had a similar noise on my 2012 WRX - ended up being a leak/stretched hose to the intercooler, could be worth checking.

Any tests I can do to confirm if this is the cause?

Car on hoist, have some one in the car and start driving.
Use a hearing device (aka long screw driver) and place the hand grip against your ear and the other end on the diff.

As you start running through the rev range, it should become apparent quickly if the diff is the issue.

Can't remember where I've seen this done before....:D

Well after finally getting the car on a lift I can confirm that it is the rear diff. So now I need to ask for a little more help.

What options should I chase now? I saw that their are some second hand diffs on ebay but most of them seem to come from STi's (R180's) and from what ive read the non sti diff isnt interchangeable with the sti diff, somethinh to do with tailshafts being bigger on the stis and whatnot. If this isnt true, feel free to let me know.

So should I try and recondition the diff or just buy a second hand one?

You would need to get one that's the same ratio, so a 4.44 (*I think!) for you model. So it keeps your gearbox up front happy.

Depending on which part of it is causing the whining, there may be a chance you can just change the centre out for a brand new aftermarket LSD, eg: Kaaz, Cusco etc, which definitely would be more fun, but a bit more mucking around.

Hard to tell which part of the gears inside would be causing the whining though. I get the feeling it might not be the centre. Have you tried dropping the oil and putting some good quality fresh stuff in?
