Exhaust leak
Have an exhaust leak from around the drivers side head.
Got a new set of headers and UP pipe courtesy of Ultrex and changed it over but I'm concerned my problem is worse than just a shattered up pipe. The exhaust leak hasn't gone and sounds very tinny. Got a couple of pics attached to see the mount area. This bolt in particular has gone on twice as far as the rest and still isn't tight. Have a feeling the head side is corroded quite badly and I'm just pulling the stud out with every turn. Put another nut on that stud that keeps coming out/loose, tighten the nut up so it's against the existing bolt/nut then grab a socket an a bit of elbow grease and tighten up that bolt until the stud is in the right length and the nut is on tight, then just un-do that 2nd bolt and take it of.
Also chuck on heaps of high temp sealant! Hope that helps champ using the Perth-WRX mobile app |
Don't use high temp sealant unless you want your car to stink like hot rubber for an hour after you turn it off. All you need is a genuine subaru gasket on each side, they are like 13 bucks each, and have a metal seal and composite flange.
If you're gonna drop your headers to change gaskets anyway, clean the threads and make sure the studs are threaded up far in the block. Don't use any anti seize unless it's very high temp (1000C+) or it will stink and smoke. Tighten the bolts to (35Nm? check your years service manual) then after a few drives tighten them again. Alternate between cylinder banks when tightening. Good luck :) |
See the gunk around the head? Is that high temp sealant? Looks to me like it was holding the studs in place which I'm hoping I'm wrong.
|
ok wow, just seeing that. If that's the case, that could indicate a serious crack in the head, so it's probably causing the header flange to not sit correctly.
|
I've got fresh gaskets on and 2 studs in particular won't tighten. You can see how much stud I've used and it was after I saw the green shit.
I'm going to drop the headers again and see if the head is ok. Helicoil it properly. Hope the head isn't completely screwed. |
Let us know how it goes mate, I'm interested to hear what it is!

I was hoping someone on here could tell me lol ... might have seen it before :)
|
I did my up-pipe and headers, I didn't have any cracks or excessive sealant, but I one of my studs were coming loose an started un-screwing. I just put 2 bolts on and that fixed the stud from coming loose and just took of that 2nd bolt.
Hopefully the block/rocker covers aren't cracked man! using the Perth-WRX mobile app |
Exhaust leak
I'll check this weekend. Was pretty deflated after spending 2 whole days changing them over.
Did it by myself and had old nut problems. Rounded nuts etc. Every knuckle has a chunk out haha |
. Every knuckle has a chunk out haha
Yep sounds like a Subaru! Good luck mate... |
I know that feel, exhaust work in general is a pain in the ass. luckily though only 1 of my head studs was partly fucked.. I had to replace nearly all the nuts though because of my cheap sockets and impatience.
|
I went and brought all new nuts for every stud and bolt I took off. Turbo, exhaust and head nuts. Just easier and $10 in hardware.
|
Well worst fears confirmed. They've tried to hold the head bolt in place using some sort of goo
Anyone with any ideas how I can fix this without taking the engine out? |
:s thats nasty
|
Yep. Pretty filthy about it. Got the car 4000kms ago. Now I find this.
|
Argh. Sorry to hear it man :( What can be done from here?
|
you could possibly sand blast it, mig weld it and retap the hole.
however, engine out to fit the problem properly. |
Only way to get the head out is engine out hey? If I could change the head without taking the engine out id be stoked but I don't have the gear to take it out and would need to pay. Know how much that'll cost me :(
|
yeah i'm stumped, seems headers nuts have been overtightned or the stud was wound in too far and cracked it.
best bet get on the phone and start calling for info / quotes / replacement |

how far off are you from needing head gaskets done? could do a 2 for 1 but get your wallet ready for a thrashing probably new head and head gaskets job 2k+ |
Engine has 190K on it. When do they get done?
If it's 2K I'll invest in some nice heads :P |
Give Bluestar or Barry at Paramount vehicle services a call.

Just a suggestion, it's actually not hard to pull an engine,i did it myself a few months ago and do not have a mechanical background. I just hired an engine crane off gumtree. If you can pull the engine yourself and drop it off at your workshop of choice, then pick it up and reinstall it yourself then you'll be saving around 1500 in labour. |

Or mick at japline  |
DIY route does depend if you can support that effort - e.g. tools, mechanically minded etc.. and space with a solid, flat concrete floor to use the engine crane.
for 190k kms, if the head gaskets haven't been done before it's probably about time. make an informed decision, make sure they know the head is cracked at the exhaust side and what options are available. repair or new, either way prob be expensive. |
father n law is a mechanic and has a crane so might be a job for him.
I am mechanically minded and don't have an issue getting dirty and really don't have the cash to hand over atm. Just spent $2500 on the piece of shit. |

Well I've got a temporary fix for an unknown time period. Once I get shit sorted, order some heads etc I can then sort taking the engine out for a real fix.
After speaking to a few of the mechanics at work I purchased some epoxy and maniseal. Took the stud out and cleaned it up a bit, I then epoxied the stud and stuck it back in. 45 mins I bolted everything back up with maniseal on the gaskets and so far so good. 15 minute drive and no exhaust leak noise. It's temporary but will get me by. |
Can the headers be welded onto the head (just on that exhaust port)?
|
No they cant. Steel to ali doesnt work.
