Perth-WRX.com - Walbro Fuel pump install

Hey all,
Had a bit of time up my sleeve while I was doing my fuel pump and thought why not do a how to thread to help anyone interested in doing this install!

Approx time : 1hr 20 mins

Tools required :

- 8mm socket
- 12mm socket
- Short Extentison
- Socket wrench
- Pliers
- Long nose pliers
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- Some type of cutters

A new genuine fuel pump gasket will also be required with this install.

1. Start by un-doing the 2 x 12mm bolts that hold the bottom section in. When taking the bottom section out make sure to push down and slide it of to the side making sure you are clearing all your seat belts at the same time.

2. Un-bolt the 4 x 12mm bolts holding the back support in.

Once the bolts are removed, lift back support towards the roof and slide of to the side.

3. Next you'll need to remove the left support bar. There will be 4 x 12mm bolts and 1 pop clip.

4. There will be a protective underlay that you will need to take off to get to the fuel pump. take out the 2 x pop clips holding it in.

5. Peel back the carpet in your boot. you will then see a cover accompanied by 4 x phillip head screws. Take all 4 out.

6. Un-plug the connector and move it out of the way. At this point in time start the car. The car will run for a couple of seconds and then stall as the connector is un-plugged. This will release any excess pressure and fuel from your 3 fuel lines. Take out the Ignition fuse (15A) behind the coin holder and disconnect the negative terminal on the battery and move it of to the side.

7. Remove the 3 Fuel hoses. The 2 hoses circled in red are a vent line and return line . Minimal fuel will leak out of these but still to play it safe grab a rag and feed it under the lines to catch any fuel. The line circled in green in the main fuel line. This line will have a fair amount of fuel come out of it so make sure you feed a rag under that line before you take it off. This line also has a special lock clip holding it tight, use the long nose pliers to squeeze in the 2 tabs and the line should pop of easy.

8. Un-do all 8 x 8mm nuts holding the fuel pump module in place. Make sure all the fuel lines and connector is out of the way, then carefully pull up on the module. Once you get about half way turn the module 90 degrees and then it should come out. It can be a little tricky so a little patience is required! :)
Lay the cover plate over the tank so nothing falls in.

9. The fun begins :) Start by taking the hose clamps and un-plugging the electrical connector of the old Fuel pump. You should be able to the bend the old fuel pump out of the module brackets.

10. Add the new filter bag to the new walbro fuel pump make sure you put the little lock ring supplied with the kit on so the filter bag doesn't fall off. You will need to cut the new hose supplied with the kit to the right size to fit the new fuel pump. Use the hose clamps supplied with the kit and install the new pump on the module. Plug the connector in and make sure you re-use the rubber base for the bottom of the pump. I opted to use a cable tie to secure it all as extra peace at mind.

11. Lay the new gasket on the studs and then put the module back into the tank. Tighten all 8 x 8mm nuts in a star formation evenly torquing down each bolt. put all fuel lines back on and plug in connector. Put the negative terminal back on the battery and put in the ignition fuse. turn the key to 'On' and you should hear the new pump prime itself, turn it on and off a couple times and then start the car and let it run for a little while.. put everything back together in reverse order.
