Default Which auto electrician should I see?

Hi guys,

I need some help finding a decent auto electrician to help me diagnose why my battery is dying so quickly.

Basically, I am running an aftermarket head unit, 2 amps (mono and 4 channel), 8 inch subwoofer and 1 farad capacitor.

The battery is an Optima Yellow Top. After a week of sitting in the garage, the battery is flat.

Checked all the fuses for power draw but came up blank.

If anyone has any ideas or can point me in the direction of the right person to see, that'd be great.

Preferably SOR.

This may not help with your general issue, but I have a spare C-Tek 5 amp charger that you can take for the time being to keep the battery on charge until the problem is found and rectified.

im an auto sparky. and i do weekend work on top of my usual 8-5 job.

un plug the capacitor and see if it stops. if not, then i can look at it for you if you want and diagnose the issue.

if it is the capacitor, i can put it through a switched solenoid if you want so its isolated when the car is off.

Better yet, piss the capacitor off completely. Such an unecessary, band aid fix.
It's only a tiny percentage it's the cap, but a rooted cap can drain the battery. Removing it will at least discount one item in the troubleshooting process.

Pm me your details Bram, and I'll arrange for you to have a look. Happy to jump the car and bring it to somewhere convenient for you.

Thanks for the offer Soksta, but the battery is dead flat (read out on the capacitor says 0.00v). I'll leave it flat until I get it fixed.

The capacitor was only ever added to prevent the headlights from flashing. If there is a better solution, I'll gladly look into changing it.

Was reading this just before you posted it. From what I read, you are very right about the capacitor. That'll be coming straight out.

To be honest, I still get a little bit of dimming with a 1300w monoblock and 4x150w front stage amp even after upgrading my grounds. It's a bit of a trade-off (at night) but I would rather ensure that my amplifiers are that little bit closer to operating at their optimum than starved of power, especially given that I listen to quite pacey music. You have a decent battery though (albeit possibly a defective one?). My next move would be to upgrade the alternator but obviously that's not cheap...

I don't think I'm pushing anywhere near enough power to be concerned about upgrading the alternator. Probably 450w rms in total.

I'll see how I go when I visit Bram next week, but I appreciate all the help you have provided, trolley. I'm actually quite interested in hearing your system some day.
