Thanks a lot, i guess a ej257 short block is what i will do then. And how sensible will i have to keep the power levels?
My advice would be to build to a budget, not a horserpower number. Build within your means, trust you chosen tuner and be happy with whatever result he gives you.

Who is going to do the tuning?
What is your budget?

Rising sun subaru have a deal on atm with fairly reasonably priced short blocks.

Nothing wrong at all with it, just chasing more power. In no rush to swap the motor anytime soon, just looking into options. Planning to build it as i can, with money restraints ect.

I'm very undecided with tuning yet, heard recommendations about multiple places. If you would recommend a place that would be awesome.

Budget is undecided i'm on no time frame for the build, car just had its 100k major service. Thinking of going fully forged short block, so that already puts the build into the 10K plus area because of the need to 6speed swap. Im really just looking into options because at the moment the car is mostly stock in terms of performance, im tossing up between just going the usual vf34, upgraded fuel pump, 1000cc injectors, e85 build and getting 300hp or going to something a bit more extreme. I want to make the choice before i purchase anything to save myself money in the future.

I dare say it would be cheaper to build your current block instead of buying an ej257 and forging that (as i said earlier the ej257 isnt factory forged like the ej207 and both the block casing in the 255 and 257 are identical). Also at vf34 power levels i wouldnt stress about having to upgrade to a 6spd. Sure its alot more reliable but your 5spd will be capable as long as you dont side step the clutch all the time and keeps your budget down.

This thread and others like it will give you plenty of info about what to, and what not to.

Rising Sun Subaru are currently doing ej257 brand new short motors for $2100 plus freight
As quoted above... Haha

JDM_STYLE 15-07-2016 03:48 PM

Considered selling and buying a 02-05 GD STi that already has the 207, 6speed, more power plus other goodies like brembos etc instead of spending $10k+ on an 06 WRX?

Better starting point too imo.

Adding to Dazdavies list... 11 mm STi Oil pump to be precise, Killerb pickup and baffle, cast STi waterpump. These alone will assist in the longevity of the engine.
Thanks for your reply,
With buying a EJ257 short motor, is there anything i would need to do to insure reliability of the engine(257 bottom with 255 head) because i believe there is a slight change in compression from the stock 255 long block.

As long as power levels are kept sensible and it's tuned properly you shouldn't have problems. Three things I'd suggest: New oil pump, RCM head gaskets and some arp2000 headstuds.
