Cruise Control Stopped Working
Then worked again, now stopped. The light on the button lights up. I've checked the fuse. Tabbing the set position does nothing.
Any ideas? MY99 RX, I assume it's the same as most other models. Who uses their cruise control anyway??? I do... Fred ________ Colorado medical marijuana dispensaries |
Is the CEL on?
CEL error can disable cruise control. |
check the vacume lines in the engine bay to cruise ?
|
Under normal condition the cruise will not engage if you have your foot
on the brake or clutch. Perhaps the micro-switches on your clutch/brake pedals are faulty or dirty so it thinks you have your foot on one of them. Time to put your head up under dash and check them. Pull them out if you can and check they open/close correctly with a multi-meter. |
I am so afraid of using cruise control when I've heard of cases where the car doesn't stop. Applying the brakes will mean cooking the entire braking system and the car had to crash into something in order to stop.
Will the coppers give an exception if we do 200 above the limit in this case ? :D |
The cruise control is fairly safe...in fact, Subaru issued a recall a while ago to fix a possible fault in one of the clips that holds the cruise control cable in place.
If the cruise control malfunctioned and the car didnt stop, all you'd need to do is whack the car in neutral or clutch in, turn off the ignition and hit the brakes. |
Cruise control is safe but can be tempermentally unreliable. Operating the clutch etc switches it off. so as per advice from FOBZ, check for false signals from the clutch.

CEL error can disable cruise control.
I have never used my cruise control, you obviously do alot of country driving. But yeh if you have a CEL error, the cruise control light will constantly flash and you can't use cruise control. |
...not to mention the check engine light would be turned on, which I'm sure he would have noticed well before he realised the cruise control didnt work.

Dang! I would use my cruise control in the maccas drive through if it would engage!! |
Thanks for the replies, no CEL, but I will check the switches under dash, may have gotten stuck...
As for turning off engine during mulfunction... won't that render the brakes useless? I think neutral and brake is a better idea unless cruise control is reving the crap out of the engine. Fred ________ Headshops |
If you turn off ignition while moving – you may want to do that in the unlikely event your throttle is stuck open – yes – you get no power brakes and no power steering. Brakes and steering will still work but you will need to push harder and use hands not fingers to steer. Try it out in a safe location.
Cruise control itself is fairly fail safe. |

Fred
Cruise would rev crap out of engine if it didn't disengage when clutch was pressed. If engine is off and brakes are too hard to push then GENTLY use hand-brake. Note: GENTLY... yank on the hand-brake at high speed and watch the fun unfold. |
i had a prob with my cruise control engaging and disengaging, i found the fault to be a loose conection with the plug behind the steering wheel cover. It also caused problems with the horn.
