Logical Hat On:
IMO depends on how long you're going to keep it for as to what route you take.

Forum Hat On:
Get this, build up from there.

Since you're in Sydney, have you spoken to MSR for their opinion?

How about Rising Sun Subaru option 2 block closed decked, mild head port, ARP 625 studs, gaskets, oil and water pumps etc.

Neil built my engine. 265awkw on 98. But from a 2.1L

Hasnt missed a beat
Thanks for the input fellas,

appreciated. Will definitely give Neil a buzz to get his thoughts, and good to know re him servicing Sydney clients too.

I didn't think that a drop-in STI stock engine would be up to it, but was suggested as an option from one guy a called.

With the forged path, given that the price of rebuilding my existing engine is comparable with a new EJ257 with forged parts (assuming good pricing on parts), what is the better route you think? Could the rebuilding quote on existing engine be a tad high or overspec'd for what I need?

If i'm going to drop $12k on a rebuild I want to know I'm getting better value over a new engine. Else dropping approx the same amount on a newbie is making more sense.

Cheers.
Hi everyone, quick status update on this.

I ended up biting the bullet and it's currently in getting an engine rebuild. Details:
- Forged Pistons
- Forged Conrods
- Upgraded Head Studs
- Race Bearings (Main & Conrod)
- Complete Gasket & Seal Kit incl. Head Gaskets
- Cylinder Head Servicing & Machining Work

Also decided to take the opportunity to replace the clutch, throwing in an Exedy HD.

Once again thanks for those that provided their thoughts! Looking forward to getting the car back.
