Default Steering Shudder - Help please!

Hi All,

Having an issue with steering shudder in my wrx. Bit of background, I have just had the front end apart to get new wheel bearings installed. After buttoning it all back together i now have steering shudder.

I have made sure that the axle bolts are tight, the wheel is tight (no side to side movement), with the front end in the air there is no shudder; stationary on the ground it shakes. It is alot worse turning right (?), and I can hear the ps pump cavitating when turning left. While turning the wheel while stationary i cannot see any air bubbles in the resovior.

Might not be relevant but it looks like the rhs power steering boot has got grease on it, but is not split. PS hoses look a bit old so i guess i should just relpace them along with the notourious o-ring and fluid?

Anyone with similar?

Cheers

You might have an air lock in the power steering fluid and yes the o rings are an issue.
Heaps on the net about replacing them
Power steering pumps are expensive

Thanks for the reply.

So i should lift the front and go lock to lock a few times with the car running to clear the air lock?

Got 1 litre of dex 3 atf and used a brake bleeder to take fluid out of the reservoir. after replacing some fluid started the car and turned the wheel slowly/medium lock to lock. Got through the 1L and took it for a test drive, seems all good now, thanks heaps Seagull!

Well after a week unfortunately things are not so good. The shudder is back and the noise from the power steering pump is 2x worse. I have read up about changing o-rings in the pump, but not sure this is going to help me..

Anyone had a noisy pump and changed the o-rings with success?
