GC8 5 Spd Gearbox Problems

Hi guys,

I've got a 97' GC8 WRX with around 240,000km on it. After spending some money it's finally reaching a place where I'm getting really happy with it. The last issue I'm facing is the 5 spd box in my car. It was loose when I bought it (as in when in 5th gear could almost push it across to 1st gear) so I took it to my local mechanic who's a Subaru guy and he replaced all 4 shifter bushings. This helped a fair bit to stop the wobble and it isn't as bad as it was but it's still quite severe. There is a fair bit of movement in the gears still and it seems almost like the left hand side spring that keep the shifter centralized when it's in neutral is gone as the shifter will slump to the left but if I push it to go into 5th it will spring back to the center. Any advice on common problems with the box, what might be wrong or what I need to replace? Would it be cheaper to just buy a 2nd hand box?

Cheers.

Take it to STechnic – Subaru Specialist Workshop
Ask for Doug.
What he doesn't know about Subaru transmissions hasn't happened or been discovered by anyone yet.

there is actually a knuckle that flogs out aswell, replace that & you'll be fine, box doesn't need to come out, you may have to file down the end of a screwdriver to get a nice flat punch to push the pin out, mine box felt like brand new after replacing this, was about $50 brand new from chaplins subarugenuineparts
