G-box, some bad news :(

Well it's my turn :-( got the bad news this morning. It's the bearings on my box which make whining noise while pressing the accelerator.

Went to Osborne Park Subaru to get it checked, (btw thanks to Tom, he's a top bloke), and apparently it's the bearings. Since they'd replace all of them it looks like $3k to keep the current box. He recommended that i should buy a reconditioned box with some warranty and he'd put it in for me.

Just to mention, i've got a MY00, absolutely no mods and that's how it's going to stay so therefore i'm not interested in a straight cut box.

What is your opinion guys? Recond box? where from? what prices am i looking at??

hybridgx 13-11-2006 11:58 AM

3k better off getting another box, not toos sure how much exactly but im very sure its way under 3k, give jap wholesalers a visit in wangara

sorry to hear mate,

just a question do you know around about how long the box will last with the whining noise until it goes completely????

Well this is what i was told by the Subaru Service Rep. it could be a month or it could be 5 years, just depends. If you hear some knocking sound too, then you know the end is near :( Basically if you are going to keep your box, dont wait for the knocking sound, but if you gonna replace it just drive till it dies.

He recommended a recond box for around $1.5k with warranty from any wreckers in perth and they can put it in for me for around $400, I'll buy myself some Redline gearbox oil and the whole excercise should set me around $2k. I think i'll wait till it dies and then i'll get the recond one unless you guys can recommend something cheaper/better?

Stupidest comment I've ever heard Maco.

$3K is a bit rich for new bearings....you can almost get a NEW box for $1500 if you know where to go..

Well that's what i'm planning on $1.5k for a new/recond with warranty standard wrx box. Where??? i've got no idea where from that's why i'm asking!!

Redline/Motul discussion is also interesting...the Subaru Rep recommended the Redline stuff to me, and since he gets no money out of it i thought it's good stuff but i'm open to suggestions.

Firstly need to sort out the box though
