Running In Oil
 

Before I get any "use the search button" replys, I know there are a few engine oil threads already, and I read all the ones I could find.

From reading these other threads, it seems that a few people advised not to go fully synthetic until 12k and not to go back to mineral after being on synthetic.

Anyhows, my new 07 is about to tick over 1500k and I was preparing to buy some replacement oil. I was having a look at the running in oil that subaru gave me with the car, and its Fully Synthetic 5W-30. Reading the bottle it talks about the running in period etc etc.

Is this not strange, as others have stated subaru recommend not using synthetic until after 12k? Is subaru putting in fully synthetic from new now? Should I stick with the fully synthetic or go back to minerial / semi synth?

Any help appreciated.

I spoke to Fat's (Fatsport) about this and he advises not to use synthetic oil for at least 12,000km's.

Apparantly Subaru can void your engine warranty if you use synthetic on the first oil change....

for new engines GO AS THIN AS U CAN!!!!! i recommend 0w-30.
ppl tend to think the thicker the oil provides more protection, however its the flow off oil that protects it.

thinner oil flow faster. think of it this way, oil also acts as a coolant, faster flow means reduced heat on internal parts. ur water coolant covers the rest so dont think that ur oil thins out too much at operating temp.

this is because oil have yet to flow through ur engine. so go thin and protect it where ITS REALLY needed. at start-up!

Because the rings will not bed in properly, I am only going off what I have heard, mind you this guy has been a Subaru mechanic for over 20 years...

since syn oil was already in the car why would they use something they dont recommend nor void ur warranty in the first place.

only logic i can think of is that u should use oil that would allow bedding of the rings. syn oils will also allow the bedding of the rings as so do semi or mineral oils.

as the guys on the oil forums says semi syn are good enough if u want to save $$ but what they did recommend is no matter what oil u use, regular and frequent changing of the oil is best. even if ur running on cheap mineral

Had a chance to call Subaru today, and eventually they confirmed that they use mineral oil for delivery and initial servicing. The full synth oil I received is for top ups only.

using dino (mineral oil) allows for rings to be bedded properly. I have read bucket loads on nabisco and iwisti forums on subject and everybody has an opinion on subject of when to change over. Suggest search on one of those forums using "dino oil" for plenty of info from other rex's.
