burning oil

Fist off, I have read every burning oil thread I can find.

However I still have a quick question. I get a little puff of white smoke out of the exhaust every now and then when I start my car and it burns a bit of oil (2 litres per 5000kms or so).

I have had a compression and cylinder leak test done at subaru, comp test at xspeed and have also had maximum look at it, all say compression is very good (only 1 cylinder out by 2 psi)

I have also put in a new turbo and seals.

Will a oil catch can at least stop the car from burning the oil? I dont mind the occasional topups.

i used about 1.5 ltr over the last 5000kms as well.

mine may be my turbo seal but everything else tests up fine as well

could be valve stem seals, although unusuall on a subaru

I think thats what the cylinder leak test was for and mine showed up fine. Im wondering if the oil is getting from the rocker cover into the intake/intake manifold via the breather lines?

The reason you get a puff of smoke in the morning (while idling or when you drive it cold stab) is most likely due to the fact that the engine is cold.. and its heating up.. as it heats up the moisture turns to steam and goes out the back of the exhaust.

Plus you will also notice a fuel smell for a little while.. its running rich as this is the cold start cycle, fuel does not atomize easily when cold.

It doesnt puff white smoke at all at idle, just one puff of white smoke on the first crank over when the engines starts. Its not steam its a white/blue smoke. Its not everytime either once once in a while.

Ill just put a catch can in to see if the oil is getting into the air intake through breather lines.

Do you have aftermarket pistons and rings?

slappy 12-01-2007 11:41 AM

nope all standard, so far three workshops canot find anything wrong with the engine other than its got 110k on the clock.
