Which Mechanic do u TRUST

Gday guys im fairly new to this forum....just got my 2004 wrx with basic bolt on mods and aftermarket ecu ofcourse...i came over from sydney not too long ago and couldnt let the car go so took it with me.

Basically im looking for a mechanic that can be trusted and not expected the usual shit from most.

SO my question is which mechanic do u take your car to and are you happy with what they charge u?

Simon 29-01-2007 05:08 PM

I usually go to Tim Slako West Racing in Osborne Park, fairly happy with his service etc. But im gunna go have a chat with Abdus at Tenagah Motorsport. I've heard very good things about him!

BOMB3R 29-01-2007 05:08 PM

Race Torque mate never had anything but great service from them. You have to be prepared to wait though as they are always busy.

Although I have never used them All Star Garage is another one.

Mister Two 29-01-2007 05:19 PM

I dont trust anyone in a position to take money from me. Get second opinions and educate yourself about the mechanics of your car. The more you know the less likely you'll get ripped.

Having said that, I have only heard good things so far about ASG and Tenagah.

BLUES 29-01-2007 05:29 PM

What aftermarket ecu have you got fitted?

RichX 29-01-2007 05:31 PM

I think Al from here goes to RevLimit MS in Carlisle? They seem alright. Thinking of getting them to do some stuff on mine. They only do Sooby stuff i'm pretty sure.

Trust me, this is invaluable infomation right there. Learning the even most basic things of your car will help you in the long run 10 fold. I will normally attempt to do sumthing (nothing abnormally hard) before i start ringing people asking for prices. This is why the forums exsist basically! Things like BoV's, Boost gauges, Exhaust, FMIC, replacing turbos etc are all fairly easy (and fustrating at times) things to do.

Who do i trust? Havnt been to a Garage as of yet, so it will be intresting to check them out. Im looking down the line of ASG atm. Head nothing but good about them atm from other people.

Assasin 29-01-2007 05:41 PM

autronics ecu.....when i say which mechanic do u trust....i mean for example......whos the man to see to build an engine that wont take the shortcut way.....and also wont take ure money and ull wont see em every week in regards to problems.......has anyone got experience with major work from those list of mechanics on that page http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/showthread.php?t=6775
or is it all a big advertisment scheme, "ill work on ure car if u wear my sticker" whats the go in this city?

Everyone has their own story to tell when it comes to workshops - some are well crafted PR campaigns, some are mates pushing mates, some are genuine horror stories, some are nothing short of BS, some are 100% legit.

There is definately a 'flavour of the month' mentality here in Perth when it comes to pushing a particular workshop/tuner/engine builder - lots of people play 'follow the leader' - i have seen many of the workshops listed be the chart topper one week, Australian Idol fat flop the next, just because some of the influential and well connected members of the forum take their cars there.

This thread will probably get locked once it deteriorates into another workshop bashing thread, so i suggest you use the 'advanced search' button to filter your way thru the copious workshop threads to give you a "internet picture" of the Perth scene.

Happy reading.

pmh 29-01-2007 06:08 PM

Easiest is to go and pay the workshop a visit. Don't call. You get a better idea of a place by going there and seeing what sort of attention and service you get.
Ask lots of questions, as Mr. 2 said, educate yourself and less likely to be ripped off.

maddog 29-01-2007 06:09 PM

Because you have an aftermarket ECU, namely Autronics you are not really restricted, most shops can look after you. RMS, Tenagah or ASG and good old X Speed are all very competent for Autronics tuning.

I use Tony Flood/Flood Motorsports for my mechanical works/ Engine/Gearbox/Diffs etc. Why? Tony's prices regularly beat the rest and his quality is second to none.

and Exleys Tyre and Brake in Willeton for...you guessed it ;)

dwrx 29-01-2007 07:24 PM

just had my car serviced at ASG, had about 15000 grand of work done by RMS but moved over to ASG...got recomended, and the guys seem cool, looking forward to getting them to do some more stuff for me :)

mr_psi 29-01-2007 07:36 PM

ASG thumbs UP!

American Dave 29-01-2007 08:12 PM

Sean at ASG gets big thumbs up from me. I have also used RMS and been very happy with their work. You also have Maximum Motorsport in Malaga who are very well known and respected rally car builders and mechanics. Add RT, Xspeed you can see there are plenty of choices here in Perth but all are busy so book ahead. I still believe as others have said previously, do as much as you can yourself! My 2 cents.

207 de 29-01-2007 08:21 PM

Racetorque would be a good one since you have an Autronic ecu. I have had lots of work done there from services to turbo's, brakes, suspension, complete spec C engine rebuilds, you name it, they can do it. Straight shooters, will tell you if they think something is not necessary or foklore....Mind you, one needs to establish a rapport with a workshop before expecting them to bend over backwards for you...

Negatives can be; price, usually competitive but can blow out when things go wrong. Time; they are often very busy as are heavily involved in the Asia Pacific Rally Championships. Communication; Always ask to speak with Lane, Dave or Lindsay, often the guy that answers the phone will not know the full story when your doing complex stuff...

RMS all the way, 100% top service, top blokes, the most honest mechanics this side of Baghdad by far!

Seconded

Yeah 29-01-2007 10:48 PM

Done most of my car's work at RMS. I cannot tel u that they are the best coz i only been to a few workshop not all.

But the service and the way they treat u at RMS is fairly polite and gd. I would highly recommend them if u need some help for ur car.

Gd luck wit it mate ;)

jEstEr? 30-01-2007 01:23 AM

at the end of the day their service might be great but its the way they treat you as a customer that will make you come back. I've heard and experienced horror stories from ALL workshops in Perth, but its how they fix the fuckups that make the difference.

There are a number of good workshops in Perth...some that have been around for a while... RMS, Racetorque, Tenagah.
Personally I have used Maximum Motorsport since 1994 and they have always looked after me (2 X WRX's and 2 x STi's). They build championship winning rally cars and are well respected around Australia. They specialise in Autronic.
Disclaimer: Yes I do have their windscreen banner on my '06 STi.

Also as stated in this thread, there are some newer so-called "fashionable" workshops around....it is yet to be seen how they will stand the test of time.

+1 for me, easy to get on with, no bull, fixed plenty of problems which were not associated with their workshop for me (due to faulty parts etc) no probs, happy to just do labour only for fitting of new and 2nd hand parts, what more can I say.
Al

Rex-io 30-01-2007 01:04 PM

ASG for me....went to Maximum once, wasn't happy with the customer service i received, but not saying that they do it to everyone blah blah :)

disclaimer : i have nothing to do with any workshops, strip clubs or brothels in perth

207 de 01-02-2007 02:08 PM

further to this, I have been to Cypher, X-Speed, RMS, Speedworks, ASG, Tenagah as well.

All were pretty good, however they did different levels of work from fitting a boost guage to changing and re building a gearbox (within 36hrs of it happening...ASG ++)

Where I have been to some of the above once, others between 3 and 10 times, I have been to RT somewhere between 20 and 50 times.

It's about establishing a rapport and being professional. I can take my car there and leave it for weeks, even months, it get taken home by owners for tuning cold starts on their way to work, if I'm working during the week I can drop it off at their place on the weekend...It takes time (and pumping alot of $$$).

Personally I have never been to MMS but have had talks with owners and have been happy with thier people skills. Problem is they are the wrong end of town for me and if I need to go that far I will stick with who I know (RT, AST) until they shit me off.

teejay 02-02-2007 02:28 AM

Xspeed - but im biased - Anthony Scali is a brilliant tuner. Fabian is a awesome mechanic, and Andre is a very smart fabricator.

Wouldnt question Sean @ ASG either - he could modify or tune my car any time and I'd not be worried.

The common link for both above - they are enthusiasts - both had modified their own cars and enjoy them as much as possible.

Being an ex nissan man, my scope of workshops is totally different. Ive never walked in the doors of RMS or MMS for example - that will change no doubt.

* I have known the xspeed boys, and sean and the ASG boys for numerous years, therefore this is some sort of gay disclaimer to avoid emo times.

Elrico 02-02-2007 06:20 AM

We'll i spose i shall see how ASG is on tuesday. I put my car in for a compression test + 75k service. Costing me $250 for the service and $88 for the compression test. RMS was $360 for a service and Tony Flood was $304. Still has me boggled why ASG is $100 cheaper :P but each to their own.

BTW i found Tony Flood was a fairly nice mechanic. He had a 10 minute convo with me over the phone about how he thinks my AFM might be on its way out and a few symptoms after i explained what my car was doing.

But once again, each to their own!

P.S. Why are there so many mechanic workshops in Malaga and places so far away!

BALISTC 02-02-2007 06:48 AM

For me, I go to ASG. I've known the boys there for a while now, and I like how they are the no-bullshit type. They'll tell you how it is, and you will get the work done for a decent price and a high level of quality.

Best of all, they are enthusiasts first and foremost, as well as mechanics. They'll take pride in your car because of this.

AntonRX 02-02-2007 07:14 AM

My dad owns a workshop so i do most the mechanic work myself however we don't tune performance cars so my car is in for a tune at ASG monday, was supost to be a few weeks ago but had problems with the computer. So far my experence with ASG is great they are very helpful (they sent my computer of to be checked out the same day) and like Joe said they do take care of your car. I have also been to Tenagah for a few parts and they have great customer service. Hyperdrive did a great job of tuning my skyline also. Like a lot of ppl have said best way to decided is to go speak to them in person

Seriously thats a ridiculous attitude. Sure, ASG might be 1km further away, but K-mart Tyre & Auto service down the road are sure to do just as good a job!
