This is what I'm involved in at UWA.

A few of you may have seen it at AHG or at Wanneroo, or at Jack's Hill for hill climb. It doesn't use a subaru engine, in fact the only thing subaru is the rear diff, see link. But it's awesome because it can accelerate to 100km in 3.3 sec and pull 1.4g around corners.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I have a question:

Can i drive it, please?

dwrx 28-02-2007 01:14 PM

fuck when i was at school and did mech work, we didnt get to make shit like that, we got to make metal knives and axes and stuff...engines? our school never had engines or cars for us to work on :( fuckers...oh no i lie! we had a little ford escort, completely smashed and fucked up with grafiti all over the fuckin thing with half a engine and i think 2 wheels....

My understanding (and Fred please feel free to correct me if I am wrong) but it is based on a worldwide formula. You basically are restricted to 600cc, normally aspirated and 4 wheels. Most people run the Honda or Yamaha 600cc motorbike engines.

UWA has had some absolutely awesome results, which compared to some of the US universities budgets has been on an absolute shoestring.

The only issue I have is that a student has to drive it. This is obviously designed to stop some of the larger uni drafting in professional drivers. The students go to massive lengths to save 20grams or get that tiny bit of additional stiffness but surely it would be far easier to get the driver up to speed. Get him as much seat time as is humanly possible.

Brendon, you are completely right about driver seat time. Unfortunately many universities struggle to get enough, and by the time they get to the comp, the first real driving is out on track... something breaks and they're out of contention.

Considering we are only given around 8 months to build this thing from scratch, the university is quite proud of the many trophies we bring back.

The engine is restricted to 600cc, but does not have to be NA. Some teams run single cylinders and turbocharge them. All engines are restricted on the intake through a 20mm restrictor. That's not stopping UWA from making just under 100hp at the engine. This and 194kg allows us to go vroooom. Carbon fibre composite monocoque chasis weighs in just over 20kg.

Our other system we've design and built is a complex Kinetic suspension system previously used by Citroen WRC cars which was later banned. And yes, there is Motec Pryde =D we're running a M800.
