The first persons reply is quite funny...
"If we could get the fatigued, the unlicensed idiots, the drunks, the junkies and Ben Cousins off the road - the road toll wouldn't be so high (like Ben Cousins)"

revenue raising...

speed was the main factor in 22 out of the 72 fatalities this year. what about the other 50 or the other 70%. Its bullshit.

Point to point speed measuring devices. HAHA, if u are flying thru that area just pull over 10m before the measuring point for a few seconds and let "time" catch up with you... MORONS.

Sounds like our tax dollars going to good use there.

Let's see, they have to go to a few European destinations to look at their speed camera set up. Nice holiday there.

Using Monash University to conduct studies (yes I know Monash have a lot of car/speed research going on). How about getting local universities to research it instead.

The results: By implementing 1000's of speed cameras, they may be able to reduce the amount of deaths per 100,000 relating to speed from 9 to 5. Because in Europe, its all about the speed cameras - not the design quality of the roads/freeways/highways - not the better driver education given.

No no no, teaching driver education from early ages, fixing the silly road signs, better identification at merge points, concentrating on tailgating, drink driving, poor driving attitudes and having realistic speed limits would not help the road toll at all.

someone on this forum (cant remember who) once said that if they were interested in saving lives they would never increase dollar value of fines but rather increase demerit points per offence...That would get idiots of the road

BEST COMMENT I HAVE EVER HEARD IN REGARDS TO REVENUE RAISING

Totaly agree.

Thats probably the main reason there are less deaths.

Bet they can't prove that any of the deaths from that horrible weekend were caused by speed alone. They all to me point to bad roads or driver error/fatigue

hahah I think there is some truth in that. Your more alert at higher speeds.

They should make cars do go over the pits every year to make sure they are road worthy. That way all the crappy bald tyre, no pads, oil leaking bunkys can be taken off the road. Also cops wouldn't have to worry about giving out yellow stickers every 5 minutes as the people in the pits would be deciding whats legal. Thats how it works in New Zealand and the cops hardly ever hand out yellows and have more time to respond to actual crime.

The amount of deaths caused by unsafe/unroadworthy cars would have to be huge. All the big collisions near my place almost always have a loud long continuous screech and then a smash and its nearly always some old magna/camry/cressida/commodore/etc with no abs and ancient tyres that hasnt pulled up in time. Im not saying new cars dont have accidents, new cars just have decent stopping distance, airbags, crumple zones etc.
