Question For Tech Nerds

dunno if anyone can tell me or maybe someone with a ps3 and knows their shit can clear it up.

Hooked up my ps3 last night to my TV, Its a sony 106cm HD LCD TV, has the HDMI ports. The ps3 does not come with the HDMI cable, only RCA cables so i hooked it up with them, put in my game NBA Street, fired it up, went into the game, graphics are awes, but the graphics are jaggered along the edges of the people/scenery (looks like a pc running a low resolution, liek when u go into setting and change the resolution.), i have seen this game in videos and in the shops and is alot smoother and clearer. My question is is this because of only using RCA Cables, they support only 540 resolution where as HDMI cables on the lcd tv are 1080p. Is this this the cause of the poor screen quality? or am i just being paranoid, any suggestions? should i get the HDMI Cable?

I'd say you've hit the nail on the head RE RCA's.. they are the worst connection type for quality as you know.. I'd bet money you'll get perfect picture with a HDMI cable..

Get the HDMI cables dude! :D

RCA is not good enough for that TV...

Oh and one other thing, don't waste your money on an expensive HDMI cable. They are all the same. Digital signals don't need shielding so doesn't matter if it's a $2 cable or a $100 cable, picture will be the same.

Sound will also be a lot better over HDMI. Ditigal sound as opposed to analog crap...

kool thanks for the help guys, had a feeling it might of been them, seen the demo of the game in the shops and trailers of it on the net and it pissed all all over mine. I fired it up and went wtf, looked soo choppy, graphics round the players and objects were just so jaggered, not smooth at all, will invest in a HDMI Cable asap and see how it goes. Yeah might get one off ebay, i know places had been jackin prices up with the ps3. Ill find one at a reasonable price.

anyone with a ps3 run it on both rca and hdmi? notice a big difference? i guess 1080 to 540 is a big jump in resolution.

Try JB Hifi for a HDMI, apparently they are giving them away free with any PS3's they are selling, so you can probably get one cheap there.

yeah ill go get one tomorrow, stuck at work til 530 today.

another quick Q, Only have the one HDMI port on the back of the TV, which has the digital set top box plugged into that, so obviously to use the ps3 have to remove that each time to plug in the ps3, removing that wont stuff up the setting on the set top box will it, just be a simple unplug replug thing? and i assume that the ps3 will now operate on the channel that the set top box was operated on and not the channel it was running on with the rca cables?

It may be your PS3 doing it. Part of the HD specs is that any device capable
of playing HD movies will deliberately degrade the signal if not using HDMI
cables. This is to reduce the quaility if you try to copy movies etc by recording
direct from the RCA cables. HDMI has special controls in place to reduce copying.

I would not have thought the game would do it, but movies would be degraded
by the PS3 over RCA.

Bottom line: I expect if you get the HDMI and it will clear up nicely.

You can get HDMI Switch boxes. Around the $200 mark for a 3-way box :D
