THOUSANDS of Japanese have been swindled in a scam in which they were sold Australian and British sheep and told they were poodles.

Flocks of sheep were marketed as fashionable accessories - available at $1600 each - by a company called Poodles as Pets.

A real poodle retails for twice that much in Japan.

The scam was uncovered when Japanese film star Maiko Kawamaki went on a talk-show and wondered why her new pet would not bark or eat dog food.

She was crestfallen when told it was a sheep.

Hundreds of other women got in touch with police to say they feared their new "poodle" was also a sheep.

One couple said they became suspicious when they took their "dog" to have its claws trimmed and were told it had hooves.

Police believe there could be 2000 people affected by the scam.

ud think even though they dont have many sheep over there they could tell the difference. Im sure one of em alogn the way would of let out a baaah. Even so they look nothing like a dog haha.

Thats funny, but if you think about it, most Japanese people have never seen a sheep before. They are not normally kept in Japan.

And if think about it from a Japanese person's perspective, a sheep does kinda look like a dog except for the nose and the hooves.

They can be pretty gullible, I had a Japanese girl boarding with me once & I was eating these sugar coated peanuts (sort of brown & lumpy) anyhoo she asked what they were & I quick as a flash told her they were kangaroo poo, I said they bread special roo's that they only fed sugar & this was the end result, took a while to convince her but she finally agreed to eat one.......I couldn't believe it when she said "ahhh nice kangaroo shit" so yeah a sheep is just like a poodle.
