It works on all GSM phones even if
* The phone is locked, even when asking for the PIN at startup.
* There is no SIM, yep thats right, NO SIM.
* The battery is critically low.

Pitty they don't tell anyone about it. Just another way the govt is
ensuring we are all safe.

a bit elaborated perhaps?

Also how does calling that number work if the battery is critically low - it doesnt magically recharge the batteries - unless its signal strength is very very low, conserving power or something similar.

Listening to talkback radio coupla years back, in reference to that lady who got lost in the sticks somewhere north of Carnarvon?... it was claimed that you could even use the 112 feature in a non-service area. Supposedly where there is no regular cell signal and you attempt to call 112, your phone would hook up with the Iridium satellite system (global coverage) even though you had no contract with them!

Perhaps it would be a licensing provision for the Iridium network, to enable this hook up in emergency situations, dunno really .

Personally I've tried it and it didn't work for me... would be a great idea if it actually worked!
