They do work.... they just cause the air to stick to the back window glass and then flow over any bootlid spoilers you have better.

Yeah saw the same when i was there last week, quite a few with vented front panels also.

The VG adds more straight line stability in peak hour traffic.... (a must have for all serious WRX owners)

You have to remember that us WRX owners will try anything to make our cars as good as the STi.
